How do I take large screenshots?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 8:57 pm

First off sorry if this is the wrong section to post this in. OK here's my issue. I've used both the in game screen capture by using print screen and FRAPS. Every time I load my screen shots into photo bucket the picture looks small on my screen. But when I view the picture from my picture folder on my computer the picture fills the screen. How do I go about making it so that the picture is large for people to view my character and scenery screen shots on here?

First off -- the game will save them in the size that your screen resolution is in game -- so you'll only get as bug as the resolution that you play the game at (or the size your monittor can display - if you increase the size in the game options - so say you normally play at 1280x800 but your monitor max is 1680x1050 then before launching to tke screenshots change your game res to the max your monitor supports to ge the largest screenie you can !)

2nd - convert your screenshots to .jpg -- .jpg compression will make a smaller filesize and some sites restrict the filesize they allow uploaded so using the .bmp format will result in the screen being downsized to fit within the allowed upload size !! (photobucket allows up to 1MB filesize IIRC and if saved in .jpg format I use about 756KB for a 3,264px × 2,448px image so they can be pretty large and not get cropped !) -- http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/JDFanning_bucket/ScreenShot4.jpg - and when I make the filesize larger than 1MB. using a higher quality image with less compression it downsizes the image but if I use a tighter compression to keep it under 1MB. the fullsize image is uploaded - so make sure you keep the .jpg filesize under 1 MB. and they should remain fullsize . (I doubled the screenshot size using Photoshop and then saved with both the highest quality .jpg which resulted in 3.7Mb filesize and again with medium quality compression for 907Kb. filesize -- the 3.7Mb. one was auto downsized to 1672x1045 while the 907Kb. with higher compression was left fullsize !)

3rd. when uploading be sure you are uploading a full size image and have selected the 1MB filesize (they have some presets for automatic cropping and if you choose those all images will get downsized) and then when posting a link use the direct link code

Thanks I'll try that out when I get a chance. I use my HDTV to play so I can set my resolution in game is set to I think 1920X1080. Looks like I'll have to mess with things in photoshop to get a larger size. I all ways thought I could just take the screen shot then load it into photobucket and it would be large.

You can if your screen resolution is small enough ! :P - problem is the in game screens are saved in .bmp format which makes for a fairly large filesize (@1680x1050 my screens are 5.04MB in the games save format - when resaved using Photoshop at maximum quality (12) it is 1Mb and at High Quality (8) setting it is 216KB in filesize and with the limits that Photobucket imposes on the free accounts those in .bmp or even Maximum quality .jpg will be downsized while the high quality setting will be left full size ( I usually adjust the qaulity setting to get the max screensize and quality setting that remains under the 1MB. limit so the shots will have the best possible quality @ the size I am uploading.) For 1920x1080 you can probably use a quality setting around 11 in photoshop - 1 step down from maximum and stay under 1MB. in most cases.

Well I tried and this is what I come up with. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w139/tatts4life_photos/Oblivion%20Scenery/Sunset2.jpg?t=1284489543

No matter how big I make it in photoshop it still comes out small or smaller.

Hmm - that's strange but in looking over the photobucket site it looks like the dimensions now state 1024x768 as the limit but they also still list 1MB as the max filesize ( http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/JDFanning_bucket/pbst.jpg ) --- They used to have several preset size options you could select when uploading and 1 of those was a 1MB option which is what I had selected as default and have always left ( I can't seem to find the selections anymore - sop maybe they have changed it and it just has left mine at 1MB but I'm still able to upload them at 1680x1050 full size and larger as long as I keep the filesize under 1MB - so not sure what is going on with yours ! Unless they have changed the options and my older account was just left as it was when they changed things ) - Do you see any size selections when uploading ?

YAY figured it out. Your screenshot of photobucket showed me that I guess there ARE options on how big to show the pictures. I never could find them. I guess I wasn't looking hard enough.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w139/tatts4life_photos/Oblivion%20Scenery/Sunset2-1.jpg?t=1284512152

now to go and reupload my pictures.

Glad you found it -- I also just noticed in the upload box there is a link to MORE OPTIONS which brings up the choices I could not find !! (it's kind of hidden in small print !)
