negotiating mod-based crashes

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 12:05 am

Hi, I have a few flagged items in my oblivion mod manager, though they rarely cause problems. I was just wondering if there was a way to determine which mod caused the game to crash. It happens just as I enter the city of Anvil, even though I successfully entered moments before.

I still use the age old, old school way to find out which mod causes my problems, make a clean save and then load each mod and test it until you get to the one that causes the crash.

It is easier to do this when i'm only running 25 mods but currently I at 173, so can take some time, but not a big thing.

You may get a better response if you posted this in the MOD or Technical forum as well

Karniest's method is the best way, but you should post your load order if you want other people to be able to help you. See my sig for my website to see if you can help yourself a little more first.

Well actually, I've made an interesting discovery while trying to figure out the problem. The problem seems to only exist with my most recent save point. The other savegames can enter Anvil, but Quicksave cannot. Unfortunately, the previous saved game is from some time back, so I'd like to preserve this one if possible. What kinds of things could have happened to Anvil since previous savegames?

Did you install any new mods since then? If so, that mod could conflict with another mod, or the load order is just screwed up.

Nope, I don't think so... and even if I had, would it account for Anvil loading fine on other saved games?

Best advice (which you are sadly learning the hard way) is to never use quicksave and autosave. Repeatedly rewriting the same save can lead to a corrupted file, for which there is no fix.

I tried just that, and things were going well, in my replay... but it started happening again, and each time I looked for a pattern, it didn't turn out that way. In my reload, sometimes Bravil would crash during the day but not the night, but another time not, and just now I was crashed from returning from Oblivion to the grass outside Bravil.

Perhaps it is caused by a mod and not a faulty resave after all. I suppose I'm back to checking out mods and which ones are causing the issue.

What you are saying sounds right. But, trying with another save was a valuable enough troubleshooting step. You learned something. If you want more help, post your load order.

Absolutely, and you're right, and thanks so far for your help. How exactly do I post my load order? This is the first time I've done this.

Click the "Import/Exprt" button, choose "Export Load Order," copy/paste results here. (Posting the load order from Wrye Bash has the advantage of including version numbers for everything, but I gather you don't have that installed yet?)

It created an oload file that my computer didn't recognize. I managed to open the data with notepad. I'm sure this is not as it's meant to be viewed:

Try "View Load Order" instead.

P.S. That is pretty funny. Imagine all the people needing help posting something that looks like that! :P

This is the original real light module, it is known to corrupt save over time , due to bloating, remove,

if you want real lights then use the version that comes with All Natural..which you should get rid of natural weather and weather inside has well in favor of All natural once again..

So, you recommend downloading All Natural, and then removing Real Lights, Natural Weather and Weather Inside?

P.S. Would that likely stop the crashes in my savegame, or just prevent savegames from becoming corrupted?

Well I did so... I think. (Man that was the most extensive mod installation process ever.) I'm afraid it's still happening.
