Let?s talk about Sound Overhauls! What do you suggest?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 6:38 pm

I remember a couple of years ago I used some sound mods, I even remember having a single omod with all my preferred mods and settings. But all that went missing when I lost a whole bunch of data due to hdd failure and lost my "base installation".

Now that I'm certain that I'm satisfied with the process of investigate, test, decide and tweak what I consider my "perfect graphic base installation" it is time to talk about Sound!

With my current ring and my latest stable installation I've been playing with a couple of characters that are already lvl 20 but I'm beginning to miss the great sound effects I used to enjoy from mods!

I will list in no particular order some of the ones I used to have (the ones I remember anyway) and would like you to tell me if they are still "current" or if you know of new sound mods that have replaced the old ones?or may be there's a guide on sound overhauls somewhere around here?

1. Oblivion Stereo Sound Overhaul
2. Atmospheric Oblivion
3. More Immersive Sound
4. Storms and Sound (and lightning? I don't remember very well, but has to do with the thunderstorms sounds and weather)
5. Symphony of Violence (I read that this is causing problems with Deadly Reflexes?is this a real problem? I use DR5 and the latest patch right now)

What do you use? What is your "perfect sound fx combination"?

Thank you in advance for any feedback!

Cheers!

There are no problems on my side with Symphony of Violence and Deadly Reflex.
In most load orders Deadly Reflex is not properly set, i`d search the problem in that.

I have merged SoV into my Bashed Patch, works without any problems. I could not play without Deadly Reflex nor without SoV.

Do not underestimate the part of the sound hardware, an X-FI sounds thousand times better than any on-board AC97 s-h-i-t.

Placebo effect, the only difference is the level of white noise caused by electrical interference. It's a much clearer sound, yes, but it's hardly an amazing difference. I'd personally buy a dedicated sound card given the choice, but I'm on a laptop these days, so I don't. I miss the clarity of my desktop's X-Fi, but I'm hardly groping over the quality of sound difference.

Nowadays onboard is quite good, putting aside the signal to noise ratio, and looking at features. You're still going to get better performance and quality on a dedicated piece of hardware, but it's not rubbish.

EDIT: Pertaining to the OP: My Environment Mod List has a few sound mods on it, and more have been linked to on the last few pages that might be worth checking out.

You could try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29676. It's pretty good.

There is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13009 that's interesting, but is not up to date with Open Cities, or Better Open Cities. You will still hear it in the Imperial City though (if you have OC).

Thank you all for your comments!

@Mr_Tea: Great to know SoV and DR are working perefectly fine in yours. I will give it a try and will merge it into my BP. I've read good things about SoV!
@wrinklyninja: Thank you for your comments and to point me to your Enviroment Mod List...it is Great! I'm glad I was not "that" lost regarding the sounds mods I planned to use and learned a couple more that catched my interest: Ambient Town Sounds and Audia Arcanum.
@Malonn: I just downloaded it to try out some of the sounds in media player and I like what I'm hearing...thanks!

I will give it a try after work...wish me a good modding evening!

Cheers!

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14472 is a must have for me, at least with an EAX enabled card. With this, it makes dungeons echo and use EAX effects. Make sure to get all the required stuff (listed on the mod's page.)

Combined with all the other sound overhaul mods, it's fantastic.

Anyone have an install order for sound overhauls? Usually I install SOV last, and I'd like to get the best of the best from each one.

I think I will try that one too! Reading wrinklyninja's LIST of Envioment Mods (great reading btw!) found a suggestion from himself:

OSSO
MIS
AO/AA
Symphony Of Violence
Ambient Town Sounds
Storms & Sounds

This ensures that OSSO's sounds are used as a base, which is then improved upon by the other mods, with S&S last to make sure you get it's awesome thunder sounds.

Which make perfect scripting sense!

Also get: Echo ChapelChant (Franciscan monk chanting in the chapels - awesome); Audia Arcanum (changes most of the spell sounds - a lot of them are from NWN), and PC Sound Set (different voicesets for your character, taken from NWN, Planescape: Torment, and Baldur's Gate). Sorry for the lack of links; I'm lazy. :P

Also: Be aware that MIS Weather and S&S have many of the same sounds (in different folders). If you install them both, you'll have stuttering during storms as the game plays both sounds during lightning strikes. I just use MIS for most sounds and S&S for the weather.
