I cant play single player because no characters appear. The fires are orange blurs. The water are grey squares... I can't log into multiplayer because the nickname is "incorrect". I can't play anything on this game!!! I pre-purchased it on steam and I've always looked forward to this. I can't believe this is happening.

Yeah my comp should be able to run this and make me breakfast, but I can't even play single player past the first 5 minutes of the game.. the minute the credits in the intro start I get a whopping 1 FPS?? This needs to be fixed I was loving it so far and then splat! Wth? All other games are running perfect on my computer -.- I have no complaints other than not being able.. to actually play the game >.>

confusing part is it was running at 60fps in the beginning also O_o

Sounds like an error I had when trying to run alien swarm on ubuntu. Turns out I forgot the dx. Try updating/reinstalling maybe?
