Far Cry 2 thoughts

Farcry 2 was fun in some sense just a few problems. The world was too big and the vehicles where too slow, the missions where very repetitive basically blow this up kill that guy or rescue this merc, and the story got boring with the hole kill the jackal crap. The game did start out to be a really great game but it went south... but that is Ubisoft for you...

The story was ok in FC2 but i hated the missions, they were all the same. Go from point A to point B and kill ALL those enemies AGAIN that you have killed before on the road, over and over again and when you reach the point B you again have to do same thing. I liked the FC1 gameplay a lot more though i hated the monsters :P

I loved the idea of FC2 but the execution was a different matter entirely. I will tell you what made me stop playing completely:

I noticed that every safehouse was almost identical to the point where I walked into an area and could predict where a spilled bag of grain would be...and I would be correct!

Also, I finished one mission for one of the weapon dealers (kill this guy in a convoy) and then I went to a different section of the game, walked into a different weapon shop and was greeted by the SAME MODEL playing the SAME VOICEOVER and sending me on the SAME MISSION!!

I understand the need for prefabs to conserve materials but to prefab missions was inexcusable to me!

It was pretty graphically though but a waste of money to me.

I enjoy mapping it and modding it, and of course the multiplayer. The singleplayer got boring after few times completing it 100%. Now im just trying to create Co-op (Damn, hard stuff with what we have :/)
Map editor was very good. Just too bad you couldn't spawn AI and make your own scenarios. People tend to prefer the original maps over custom maps they don't know, and I can unserstand that, as some people just make weird and unbalanced maps or just chaotic random maps.
i can understand that to there were a lot a of... weird maps and some awesome ones that were just not balanced. and I wish that we could spawn enemy AI in too. :(

Ubisoft was the publisher of Far Cry. When they found out that the game was a hit, they bought the franchise off of Crytek.

I was impressed with FC2, but also quite disappointed. For me, I think the biggest issue was weapon balancing. None of the weapons were dealing out realistic damage. That really spoiled immersion for me. Also, repetitive missions were a downer. Meh. I just hope FC3 is a vast improvment.

Yeah, the weapon balancing in Far Cry 2 is really weird.

And some good news for you all: a friend of mine actually cracked the editor for Far Cry 2, and has been able to develop multiplayer mods to enhance the gameplay. He isn't keen on letting the average Joe get a hold on it though, as it can be used to develop cheats as well. :( So only a few trusted people have the cracked editor and have been developing for it. Unfortunately, singleplayer mods have been having trouble with the AI, but they have gotten very close to allowing the server slots to extend past 16 players (its harder than you might think).

If you haven't played Far Cry 2 in a while you might want to hit up some online ranked matches on a WGC server, as this is what has been running the mods. You can also feel free to ask about it at waikikigunclub.com, they have some more cool information on their website (just dont be an idiot please). :D

Cheers and happy fragging!

I dug this up from one of my Ubisoft Forums. It talks about what it takes to make a great map in FC2, or any game really. I hope these 6 things apply to Crysis 2. There was a lot of heart and sole put into making all those spectacular maps.

Keys to Successful Mapping (and game design)
Replay – something about a map that makes the majority of times it is played a different experience that is both inviting and/or fun. Often tied closely to the players’ perception of the maps flow and balance.

Flow – invisible lines that connect points of interest by subconsciously guiding the player through the map, showing them through their own instinct, when to stop or run, which over and what under, or left or right turn to take. Often triggered in the player through an emotional response or muscle memory.

Performance – the maps ability to perform adequately for the type of game play exercised (not intended but actually practiced) in the maps different areas. More simply put, no obvious deviation in screen tearing or frames per second that might hinder predictable movement and control for the player.

Balance – the quality about a map that allows the players on each side to recognize their purpose in the world immediately and use the tools given to them to have a dynamic but fair match, versus, the actual layout of the map. In it’s simplest form, symmetry.

Craft – the skill and care put forward by the maker to create a believable veil that covers the eyes of those it hosts too. This usually includes a level of interactivity that players must have to put forward when reacting to or believing in the environment.

Iconism – the thing easiest to describe a map using one sentence or even one word. Often genre but occasionally object, statue, or location influenced. More simply, the thing about a map that allows it to stand out. Often how a maps screen shot embodies the idea of the map.

Yah, i know. FMV and WGC have done a lot, but i'm the one that made the AI in the map editor. Really, i think we can do countless of thingies in the editor, just by modding it.

@SLIpro, I am assuming on the PC?

If you get a change to try it on the Xbox360 check out 'Iron Rebellion' 'Dismalland' or 'Serpent Alley'
