Firefly Character

Post » Mon Nov 17, 2008 3:52 pm

Had New Vegas for awhile now, but haven't really gotten into it. Just been busy with some other things and haven't had the time. Now with it being winter and there being nothing else to do, I decided to start actually playing the game.

Being a huge fan of the tv series Firefly (if you haven't seen it, quit reading this and go watch it lol) I wanted to make my character based off of Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Did my first try, playing on very easy, not in hardcoe either, and I got absolutely murdered. Uh.. See, I'm trying to run around mainly using only a revolver (or other pistol when I run out of ammo.) Basically, it's not working. I do ok until I run into gang leaders or superior numbers or something. I carry some other weapons too, but for rp purposes, I was really focusing on revolvers. It's not working out. I'm not real big with the Fallout series, more of an Elder Scrolls guy, so I can't say I exactly know what I'm doing.

Could use some advice on a better build.. is it not even possible to beat the game with handguns? Fighting is incredibly hard since they fire so slowly, and Mal wouldn't be the kind of guy to go sneaking around shooting people in the back. Anyway, all help is appreciated.

Also, I have almost no clue as to what different weapons/armors/clothes there are in the game. If anyone knows where I can find some kind of uniform that would match Reynolds' outfit the best, that'd be great. So far the closest thing I've found is a sheriffs duster, which I guess comes pretty close, since it fits the whole "Browncoat" thing. Not a big fan of the star on the front though.

Sheriffs coat in Primms sherif house would be close but not perfect.

The build ofv a rogue and leader are his traits.

So.

Strength 5.
Perception 6+.
Endurance 5 ( If I remember he prefers not getting into fights, at least not ones he can't win ).
Charisma, 6 -7 a leader but easy to manipulate, and loathe to be charming towards others and has an insular outlook.
Intelligence, 5 -7, Smart but not brainy and quite deprecating in wit, lets others do the work or thinking.
Agility, 6 -7, A gun slinger fast but not super fast.
Luck, 6-7 again, lucky but in a bad way alot of times.

Weapons, pistols, hunting rifles and shotguns match the look, but lasers could work but nowhere close visually.

Considering the character built to destroy sounds like a jinxy trait he may have, as prone to things falling apart but taking down foes with it.

Skills, Guns, Barter and Speech imo.

I can tell you that early on it's hard. I had an epic battle with Geckos on Normal just to get to Primm. It does get better, I'd say right around Level 5. If you get some jobs from the Garrets at the Atomic Wrangler in Freeside, it'll lead you to that duster you seek...no star on it. I love that duster. :) http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bounty_hunter_duster

I loved Firefly, it was kinda cheesy but it really worked for that series. I'm using a similar build with Reynolds in mind, using the bounty hunter duster. I also use Lucky, Maria, Mysterious Magnum, and hunting shotgun. I try not to be a sniper with this build, to stay true to character, but it's really hard knowing how much easier it would be to sit back and get those sneak crits.

I remember that he said in the second last episode that he hates lasers, when he get shot at with one :P The weapons they use in the series are like old-school cowboyish gauss weapons or something.

I don't know how you'd survive better. I could survive pretty good with a revolver only. I think you need either http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Lucky or http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Mysterious_Magnum, and later in the game, the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Ranger_Sequoia. For an outfit, the closest would be the Bounty Hunter's Duster, but it's not perfect at all. You could also use some Traits and Perks that will enhance your revolver-wielding aswell, I can't be arsed to list all that would be good for you now, but I can say http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Gunslinger (if you use VATS anything) and http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Cowboy would work well.

I'd love if some dedicated modder(s) would get ahead and make a Firefly/Serenity mod. Really. If no story, then atleast a pack with the crews outfits (plus Alliance and Independent uniforms if you'd like that) and their weapons. But if you want to make a story, then do the characters, do their ship, make it crashed or landed somewhere, and make you help them with different things or tell the Alliance about them.

:tops: My current thing is to see how many other universes I can create a character for using the vanilla game.
If some one modded Firefly fully into NV, I would be a fan of theirs instantly.

The thing I love about their guns is you never quite know what they are, gauss as you say would make sense, or even rail technology.
I know they had an episode where they had to steal the original prototype laser pistol, but they never come out and say what they use.

Reload and design suggest solid slugs as do wounds, but sound and some light effects suggest power energy.

I'm just happy I'm not the only one here who is a fan of Firefly and Serenity. Could you imagine roaming the Mojave with River Tam? :toughninja:

Yeah, they're a mystery  They don't sound like real-life firearms, still they have the look of cowboy firearms like revolvers and lever-action rifles. They have a more high-tech sound, but don't shoot a laser beam or anything visible. Mal also says something like "I hate lasers!" in the second last episode when he's fired at with one.

PS: After re-watching the episode, I noticed many things. Like weapons that are not cowboyish, like an AK-47, but still sounds like a high-tech weapon, and there's also a mounted http://www.imfdb.org/images/7/76/M60d.jpg on that hovercar that does sound like a real-life firearm. And Jayne has his sniper rifle that uses real bullets. So they are still used in some places, but has probably been phased out.

Yes this is one reason I love the show, it's kind of hyper realistic with costumes but totally madcap Science mixed in.
Then you have the humour and action, that just makes it a Sci Fi western and a good watch.

Yes very much so, although any could fit into NV very easily imo, which leads me to.

On topic: Certain companions could with some work be used as placements for the crew, the two most obvious imo are....
Boone and Veronica.
So I think this game really suits the idea of a firefly feel.

Shame that they cancelled the show............. :nope:

And yeah, New Vegas seems like a perfect game for a Firefly mod, it has got cowboys in a futuristic setting too! :D

Ahahahahah!!!! Picturing Boone in the Jayne role made my day!! *snickersnortlaugh*
"Jaynestown" has to be one of my fave episodes. Great movie, great show, great characters. Count me in on the 'would love a Firefly' mod group. That could be wicked.

As far as the weapons in firefly go, I think they're basically the same as modern (and old western) firearms, except the bullets possibly use an advanced propellant other than gun powder and primers. That explains why the guns and bullets look the same but sound different.

For companions I was planning on taking Cass for the role of Zoey, she seemed the most fitting.

Mods would be great, but I'm on xbox lol.

I guess I'll just try to level up before moving too far into the questline, and maybe expand my weapon selection a little.

In terms of weapons, you should consider That Gun, since it's essentially a futuristic revolver, it seems rather appropriate.

Also, thanks to you I have the Firefly theme stuck in my head. :whistling:

Whoops, I had forgotten about That Gun or I would've suggested it myself. Too bad its range isn't the greatest. As for making your guy a bit more durable without having to load up on heavy armor except for key battles, I would get the Armor implant and get both levels of the perk that makes you tougher. Other perks - hmmm.... Since you like handguns, Gunslinger of course, Better Criticals, Sniper maybe and Lady Luck. Lady Luck seems to fit better than Mysterious Stranger. Since 'things don't never go smooth' for Malcom Reynolds, I wouldn't boost his Speech too much, though you could improve Barter as much as you like. Keep a stash of Meeting People magazines and Party Time Mentats just in case.

Yeah I thought about 'That Gun'. I usually keep it with me as a sort of bug/pest killer. But, after you get Mysterious Magnum and Lucky, and even Maria, it's really hard to use 'That Gun'. Especially since it's the only revolver that DOESN'T benefit from the Cowboy perk.

the hunting revolver is very powerful for a pistol type and it also has a scope. also there is a lucky. many weapons different ammo so you might to get all the best pistols in case you start to run out of ammo for one gun.

if you not going to wear decent armor then get the implant that acts as such and get perks that does the same. you have a chance of getting robot as a sidekick at primm and and a human at novac. getting there isn't too hard.

Don't worry my geekness runs forth with serenity, and as both Adam Baldwin and Nathan Fillion ( the devilish rogue one I'm told ) are in it.
It's one of the few sci fi films that all can enjoy here.

That gun is meant to be in Cowboy's form list now, at least by the wiki's info, so even more reasons to go for it.
The other outfit that fits ( roughly ) and if you added a duster on top almost exactly.. is the field hand outfit imo.

I thought so too... if it was retextured with beige pants, a red shirt and without the gloves and that handkerchief around the neck it would be ace
