Armor for a WWII Solidier Character Build?

Post » Wed Nov 19, 2008 8:07 am

In my eyes the 22. SMG looks the most like a tompson of all the weapons in the game. correct me if iam wrong but english soldiers used a smal amount of tompsons in the early stages of the war until they made the STEN.

You are incorrect. They used a pretty sizable amount of Thompsons early in the war. If I'm not too lazy maybe I'll look up some of the production numbers. I also realized I'm a moron and forgot to list the 9mm SMG in my list of WWII appropriate weapons. And nobody called me on it!

-Gunny out.

They did, but for a WWII Thompson you should look at the Laser RCW instead.

I know it looks more like a tompson but the only problem i have with the gun is for using in a WWII soldier roleplaying.
cause the last time i checkt nobody used laser rifles in WWII.

CCNA >> I am not interested in refuting anybody. You wrote, and I quote: "Soldiers in WWII did not have Armor. Even their metal helmets were not going to stop any shrapnel or bullets. All they had were clothes."
I provided links to sources about WWII soldiers which did have and used armour. And not as part of some experiment in some obscure isolated cases. I was not arguing how common it was, neither I discussed its effectiveness. I don't think I know enough to be qualified. But you seems to know more then me...

I was poking you with that statement. :)

Yes, I mistyped in the first post about saying no one had armor. But really, that statement was effectively true. No troops regularly used armor in WWII in combat, or if they did, not for very long. I studied WWII extensively in the 70's both for academic curiosity and for the Model Building I was doing back then. In all the discussions of Body Armor in WWII, the troops universally pitched the stuff as it was for all intents useless and wearing it was more dangerous than not. Even without the reduced mobility, the stuff was just not comfortable to wear. The weight of the early armor was almost as much as all the other gear combined that they carried. The thickenss of the metal required to stop a combat load bullet made for very heavy armor. They did come up with a relatively light weight armor, but the area covered was small, and the armor was not effective at dealing with most of the stuff flying around on the battlefield. By the time the first skirmishes or battles were over, what was not working for the troops, armor or other kit, was dumped so that either more ammo and other necessary supplies could be carried.

I was at the bookstore tonight picking up some modeling magazines. I wandered over to the Mititary History section and browsed through some books on Infantry and their equipment. All the books mentioned that there was some body armor in WWII, just that troops did not use it due to weight. There was even armor for the Marines in the Pacific (which I did not know about). It looked like a photgraphers vest. However due to weight and heat, that armor was usually taken off also.

So, yes, there was armor in WWII. It's use was infrequent.

CCNA >> I agree, it was not terribly common. Still dozens of thousand pieces were produced and delivered. Say flamethrower was also not common issue and it was not very practical either. Lot of army equipment isn't.
Bye the way, Russian soldiers on Eastern front tended to discard their helmets, gas masks and bayonets on first occasion. I know British in Africa also "rationalised" their equipment after few marches. So what is and what isn't "practical" is quit relative.

You are correct, the .22 SMG looks like a Lewis gun. It is also similar to a Soviet Red Army LMG used in WW II. I believe it was called the DHSK...always mixing up letters in abbreviations. The Lewis was 7.7 mm (30 caliber), I think the DHSK was 7.62mm.

About 15 years ago the US Penal system refurbished and modded Lewis Guns with Laser sights for use by guards at maximum security facilities. Part of the idea was a prisoner noticing the little red dots on him or others would back down. Don't know if they are still using them. Would be cool if you could mod a .22 SMG with a laser sight.

I know someone made a mod with WW II Nazi SS uniforms, and weapons. Maybe there is a mod for allied gear out there. If the OP is not using a PC my apologies for suggesting a mod.

You should deffinentally grab "This Machine" for this Role=Play. That was WWII-ish right?

I doubt any WWII armor would've been protective enough against the high powered bolt rifles to justify wearing it anyways. Sure maybe it would stop a few 9mm rounds from the MP40 or p38 but how effective would it be at stopping the K98 or the Gewehr 43? I wouldn't have bothered with the armor either. Even with modern body armor you still have to worry about the 7.62x54r.

@I was out of name ideas: If by WWIIish you mean made in 1936 and acted as one of the main battle rifles all throughout WWII then yes you are correct.
