The Rifleman

Post » Mon Nov 24, 2008 7:14 pm

I like to RP some realism into my characters. So I have taken to carrying 1 rifle, 1 handgun, and a 1-handed melee/unarmed weapon.

My question for you is if you could have one scoped rifle, one handgun, and 1 1-handed melee/unarmed weapon - to use for the entire game, in every situation -
what would they be and why?

Silenced sniper - great range, sneak factor, and dmg
9mm Handgun, with ext. mags - lots of ammo, decent dmg, good range, and accuracy
(1 - handed)Ballistic fist - high dmg, high chance of crit
(2 - handed)Chainsaw - very high dmg, and some much fun

First of all, if you are not going (or rather difficult) to get high tier stuff from the beginning.

So I will ignore the "to use for the entire game" part.

There is Trail Carbine, Ranger Sequoia and Pushy/Ballistic Fist.

For early game, however, is Ratslayer, That Gun and Sledgehammer.

The sniper(with a silencer), and a 9mm are very easy guns to get, and to mod early in the game. I know that the chainsaw isn't 1-handed, that why I edited my remark.

Simple..

Hunting rifle, modded fully.
10mm modded fully. ( I would say 12.7 pistol however A: is not a holdout, and B: is far more bulky ).
Spiked knuckles.

Reasons they're great weapons, make the game fun but not insanely easy and..
I really dislike unique weapons in this game, only close combat ones seem to fit imo.

Early game scoped: Varmint rifle fully modded or Ratslayer. Ratslayer is not that tough to get and I can usually find it before I can get all the mods for the varmint.

Later game scoped: Fully modded hunting rifle - though if I could ever find a scope for them - trail carbine or brushgun as they do well very well up close.

Side arm (yes I know you said handgun, but...): 9mm or 10mm SMG preferably fully modded. For up close nasty fights, especially when dealing with cazadors and nightstalkers. Besides they dont weigh much more than a .44 or hunting revolver. If I was concerned about being sneaky I would take a fully modded 10mm pistol.

Melee/unarmed: Combat knife (Chance's if you can get it) for melee, brass/spiked knuckles/powerfist depending on unarmed skill. Unique versions if you can get them. The knife and knuckles can be snuck into casinos.

I'm going to start forcing myself to do this for more realism and the fact that I pretty much only use one rifle, pistol, melee weapon any way. I'm such a pack rat I carry many more weapons than I ever use for those "just in case" moments that rarely if ever happen. I will allow myself one "just in case weapon" that ED-E or Rex can carry for me.

P.S. I was surprised to find out how much crit damage the LE Abilene Kid BB gun did. Definately a "You'll shoot your eye out kid!" experience.

I like the idea of the fully modded hunting rifle. After all, a fully repaired hunting rifle does a tad more damage than a sniper rifle...throw a scope on it and you got yourself a better sniper rifle. But if your not into climbing over mountains and stalking targets then the best run 'n gun rifle I can think of would be the All American. For sidearm just stick with 9mm maybe until you obtain Maria, then idk about melle weapon...combat knife?...

Personally, from what I've seen, I'd say a standard Sniper Rifle with all the trimmings (if you are a sneaky long range, beret wearing dude) OR a Trail Carbine for a bit more flexibility with range (powerful at all ranges really), then a Magnum with all the trimmings and a Bumper Sword (all well maintained of course).. I love that sword, its so effective and impressive to get a hold of early on - but the chainsaw is also good fun ^_^

Thanks I was going to try out maria on another playthrough I have ( 9mm only build ), is it any good?

I tend to pathologically avoid using the best guns unless for role for weird reasons I can't explain, even then I stick to the normal versions.

The reason I like the hunting rifle is the noise, the look, the feel and the fact it can't be silenced tbh.
As I play on normal hardcoe I've yet to run into an area where even low tier weapons like a varmit can't kill tougher enemies.
