Anti Materiel Rifle

Post » Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:27 pm

My character cuddles up with his AMR each night. I love love love that gun.

Sure, every shot counts, as you only need to take one shot. It is by no means a Primary Weapon, nor is at all usefull in medium or close distance fights, especially with a number of enemies. But, when you can take the time to line up the shot, your fight is over as soon as you pull the trigger.

This... :foodndrink:

According to wiki the weapon actually weighs 30 pounds without optics. Just for trivia. :)

I am a smart enough guy to be friends with people who spend absurd amounts of money on things. That way I get to enjoy them while someone else pays for them. Anyway, my buddies 50 cal (it's not a Barret, but it is a similar gun) looks a lot like the AMR in the game. I don't think it is possible to shoot that gun without a tripod or bipod. I tried to site down the barrel with it before shooting and the thought of pulling the trigger while the gun was swaying around scared me. I for sure did not want to hurt someone a mile or two away if I missed the target (or the barn it was attached to). However the gun sway in the game is quite realistic as far as this gun goes.

Anyway, this is a big heavy gun and I am glad it is in an enviorment with which I get to enjoy it.

If only we could lay prone to have more accurate shots.

my only beef is that gauss rifle is just better in almost every way.

Gauss rifle costs more than twice as much per shot (base price 15 versus 6), for a less than 10% improvement on damage (120 versus 110). It also eats half a pound of ammo per shot, though it's a lighter weapon than the AMR so this is countered somewhat. If you really want to crank up the ridiculousness factor, you have to use Overcharge ammo (costs 22 caps in ammo per shot) or Maxcharge ammo (costs 38 caps in ammo per shot). Also if you use OC/MC, your repair bill is going to go up very fast.

Further...the gauss rifle is a very powerful and good weapon, but several of the other energy weapons are rather lackluster. Consider the gauss rifle a reward for investing enough in Energy Weapons skill to be able to use it properly. :P

It's not overrated when you want to kill stuff hard.

I found that Deathclaws really do not climb very well. If you get high up on a hillside then work your way down into the valleys after first cleaning out the Deathclaws, it makes life a lot easier.

The only time I used it was to clear the Quarry. Using it on a pack of deathclaws that can get at you is suicide.

I have a suppressor on my sniper and it is just perfect for getting the deathclaws to 'come to papa' one at a time. When they get to me I just smack em' with pushy and that's it.

I use the ratslayer a lot. Any medium character goes down pretty quick, it has a nice rate of fire, another problem the AMR has. The silencer let me take out an entire fiend group without them really knowing where I was. Rex wanders in front and takes one ... dumb dog. ;)

Overrated yes, kinda useless yes.

It's not over-rated at all & it has its uses. But I still don't like using it. Too heavy for me to want to lug around all the time as my main sniper just on principle (my chr's are short and not terribly strong, hehe) and the slow rate of fire annoys me to no end. When you're talking about sniping things from a far distance anyway, especially if you're talking extreme distance, I'd rather be faster/lighter, even if it sometimes takes more than one shot.

In the real world, anti-materiel rifles are not carried by individual soldiers. Make your companion/spotter/mule carry the weapon until you need to use it. :D

Rex has been hauling it and the ammo around for a long time. I only used it for the quarry.

I thought I remembered you saying you shot a .50 cal before. I have to say, I'm a bit jealous. :) Damn the kick on that weapon IRL must be crazy. How much does your buddy's rifle weigh? Not sure what where you live, but is it legal to own?

I do think they're legal, because of them being to clumsy to use for criminal purposes, but they're *really* expensive. I mean *REALLY* expensive.

http://www.barrett.net/order/consumer if you'd like to own a Barrett .50 caliber rifle. :) Regulations vary by region of course. Really it's kind of funny when law-makers ban or try to ban the sale of .50 caliber rifles. They're big. Real big. And heavy. And expensive. Criminals don't want a 8,000$ cannon, they want a 100$ pistol they can hide under a jacket.

They are legal. As one said, I am not sure as to why a criminal would ever want to use one of these. TBH, I am not sure why anyone would want to use one of these outside of combat. But it is fun.

His gun as a Muzzle Brake on it, just like most Canons and Howitzers have, so the recoil is not that bad. However at about 35 pounds (I did not weigh it, just guessing) it was quite unweildy. And, I really don't think it is possible for a person with normal strength to aim that thing without a support. Oh, Ear Protection is required use with this gun, even if you are observing. It is very very very LOUD.
