Mouse and keyboard vs controller

Post » Sun Dec 28, 2008 1:38 pm

Not quite the topic at hand since this is a single player game but, http://www.rahulsood.com/2010/07/console-gamers-get-killed-against-pc.html.

Controllers have their niche, but it isn't FPS games.

M&K for me. My hands get pretty sore after a few (*ahem12cough*) hours, but not nearly as bad as with controllers. Much easier aiming for me, too.

I find this topic amusing cause FONV is the first in the FO series that I got for a console because I wanted my play experience to be playable out of the box without getting graphic card, ram, this and that updates before I even install it.

After playing it through twice and on my third playthru, I am soo ready to purchase it for my PC. I like to be able to download mods, manipulate my screenshots for downloading, and the M&K are soo much more responsive. I didn't use VATS nearly as much in FO3 as I do when I play FONV on my PS3.

So for me, the mouse and keyboard are better and I have learned to keep my FPSer's to the PC.

I think the reaction time would be quicker with a mouse and keyboard then with a controller, I notice that sometimes when u go to access the pip-boy when your under attack, takes forever to come up. Same as if your reloading.

I have a trackball and keyboard. I use just my middle finger, lightly to move the ball. I have recently done several 20 hour sessions.

There is so little effort required to look around that the only thing that gets tired is my left hand, the movement hand. It does cramp up a bit after many hours but FNV is pretty tame from a shooter point of view, so it matters little. I lift weights so my shoulders don't bother me, when I was young and weak the back of my shoulders would develop a 'hot wire' that would become very painful and shut down my session.

I'm 64 this year.

OK..i'm curious. I played FO3 for about a year on the xbox before moving to he PC. When i started playing on the PC, i tried playing using the mouse and keyboard but just couldn't get used to it. so i bought an Xbox wireless controller.

I know that mouse and keyboard offers more accuracy etc but i'm willing to give all that up for comfort.

So what i wanna know is...what do you ladies and germs preffers...and why

I started gaming on PC in the late 90's (Doom 2, Diablo, MDK) and it didn't take long to get used to the mouse. However I do prefer the Xbox controller, I just find it a little more smooth.

Then again, the mods available on PC would sure be enough compensation to deal with it. :) Also, like others have already said, the PC is better for accuracy and such.

However, I could not imagine tolerating a mouse and keyboard for games like Madden Football or NBA 2K11.
(are those games even on PC?)

Hmmm...so it's pretty much M&K for you guys. Quite unexpected, really. And just to clarify once more, my question wasn't 'console vs PC', but for people who does play on the pc.

I always figured that for a game such as these, one where you can easily play for hours, comfort would be the main priority. See, recently i started to play Mass effect 2, and since it doesn't support controller, i was forced to use the M&K anyway. After just a couple of hours of gameplay,i have to stop because my shoulder hurts and my eyes feels like they're going to melt.

So my question is, how do you guys can manage to play fo3 and fnv for hours using M&K without feeling like you just got hit on your shoulder by a sleedgehammer...and are slowly going blind? ok..wireless M&K... but then what? you can't keep both of them on your lap...

Any tips?

Ouch, that sounds awful. :cryvaultboy:

I play at my desk with all the usual ergo setup stuff to keep my hands from exploding when typing and doing graphics. So, neutral wrist, shoulder, elbow position, straight back-- well, straightish, I find myself hunching forward and making my neck hurt a little trying to see little details and distant targets-- anyway, having a chair that doesn't encourage me to slouch really helps. I'd be a little cautious of wireless stuff if you wind up lounging and curling your back up with stuff on your lap. The screen height can really affect my neck angle, and slouching pulls my shoulders forward and stretches the muscle between my shoulder blade and spine-- that's a sensation like it's on fire, so I keep the mouse in easy reach.

Then it's ergo mouse and keyboard. Well worth seeking out and experimenting to find what you like-- you'll be using them for everything else you do on the compooter anyway. My mouse hand used to curl up like a claw in past years, but the mouse I use now is so great for my hand that now it's my WASD hand that feels it the most. A split keyboard with a rise in the middle took a big load off my left hand for gaming. (Annoyingly, it makes my already terrible typing even less accurate, but I got priorities, dammit! )

Lastly, (and sadly, I know) is get some strength &/or physical therapy exercise! It rules, as PenGun testified.

Next for my neck is going to be some #@%&$! glasses that have a focal range at about 2.5 feet-- the cheapo reading goggles I use to read focus nicely at about 1 foot, so I slouch forward see the screen. Really doesn't cut it after about hour 10...

I have my PC hooked up to my HDTV (55"!) in the livingroom, and I play with a wireless mouse and keyboard. I use a wooden board on my lap to put the M&K on so I can lean back comfortably on the couch... I found that if I used the coffee table, I would get a sore back due to the angle of my neck looking up at the screen. (I used to play on a laptop on the coffee table without discomfort, but then I was looking at a more downward angle at the screen.)

Comfort is really important for long play sessions. Playing at a desk is usually fine--I spend 8 hours every day designing on a PC at work and I never have any trouble, although it helps that I have a really good chair that I can adjust exactly to my needs.

You really just have to figure out a good arrangement so that you can sit comfortably with your arms resting at the right height. If the couch is no good, maybe a comfy chair with armrests and a TV tray for the M&K?
