Which processor

Post » Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:03 pm

So I am looking to buy a new gaming laptop so I could run better games faster (like C2) ,
But I don't want to spend $1,000,000 on the computer so I wanted to know,
Will an Intel Core i5 540M 2.53 GHz run games (like C2) not only fast but with a high graphics setting aswell? (Not nessecerally maxed out settings, but high)
The other option for me would be an i7 processor which I know runs well but that puts my price up a lot.
So, does an i5 cut it?
Quick answers are thanked

EDIT: The i5 processor I stated above has a turbo mode were it can clock up to 3GHz but I would prefer not to use it as I am not a fan of overclocking.

I doubt you would ever need to spend as much as 1 million dollars on any computer to run a game.

The i5 would probably be good enough. The other thing to consider is the graphics card, as that really helps with running games like this.

The 1 million thing was a joke.
The graphics card is either a...
1) 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5850
2) 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

I will probably look to get the NVIDIA.

I don't know about NVIDIA cards. However, I have heard that the HD 5850 is amazing.

It's pretty much the same . ATI is cheaper, NVIDIA only has better Tessellation but cost more.

And pretty much any dual core CPU will run games like CS 1 and 2 on very high becaus they don't play major roll in games GPU does!!

I hope this will help in upgreding pc.

The mobility 5850 if gddr5 kicks the green stuff out of the gtx 260m. But when it comes to the processor I would spend the money on the quad core i7 then the dual core i5.

This game engine (CryEngine 3) does everything in real time, and supports multi-core processing. Therefore, the CPU is very important.

Yes multi core has been getting more support. Also the quad core will be worth it if you play rts's and even for general computing.

the gtx 260 is dx10 and will not be able to take advantage of the dx11 being offered in crysis 2 while the ati 5850m will be able to make use of it.

I would save up a bit and buy the better PC. If I were you I would buy an SLI capable motherboard with and i7(preferably LGA 1366) and a GTX 460. The 460 has proven to be a VERY good card, especially in SLI because of the great scaling. It is about at a mid price point as well. You could always wait for some next-gen stuff though.

I would suggest a quad core cpu like the i5 750, but that AMD Radeon 5850 is just fine.
