Should I get a 6870?

Post » Thu Jan 08, 2009 9:21 pm

Hello dudes! Yes, I was recently planning to buy a GTX 460 until.... The release of the 6870!! It's only 250$, runs Crysis @ 43 FPS on Very High, 4xAA and 1920x1200. The 460 is much weaker for the same price so should I go for the 6870? My specs:

GTX 260
i5 661 @ 3.33ghz
ASUS P7P55-M
Windows 7 64-bit
Antec Basiq 550w (ignore this, buying a trupower 800w soon)

People have been telling me to go for the 6870 so far, just want to be 100% certain.

P:S Yes, I've been posting alot of these GPU purchasing threads and I apologize. Once I get a definitive answer, I'm going to newegg and buying one. Thanks again :D

Get a GeForce GTX460 1GB for $50 cheaper and then overclock the GPU to 850MHz, the Shaders to 1700MHz and the Memory to 4000MHz.

After doing that, you get 1 - 2 less fps than the Radeon HD6870 while getting much better DX11 performance with tesselation.

This will essentially save you $50 and give you the performance of the Radeon HD6870.

I have checked out the 6870 it can mesure up to the 5850 and can beat it in some games, plus it has much better improved tesselation rendering. It uses a bit less power and has new features like stereoscopic 3D and Accelerated Parallel Processing Technology, plus from reviews people have said that it also scales better in crossfire and since it also has HDMI 1.4a support you can watch blu-ray movies at 1080p

Since I don't really favour overclock, I'm gonna go with the 6870. Thanks guys for the quick reply, I'm off to newegg :D

The 6870 can be overclocked also. Never justify the purchase of another card based off the fact that it can be overclocked... so can the other card. :)

True, but don't think Nvidia will cower behind the 6000 series.

Although the 6XXX series was a big letdown :( I have an HD 5770. What should my next upgrade be for as cheap as possible is what I am looking for.

The 6850 and 6870 are only mid-range in the 6000 series. They're to replace the 5750/5770 range. The 6950, 6970 and 6990 will be crazy. :)

I am seriously likeing the price to performance that the 6870 and 6850 offer.

The 6870 is running Crysis @ Very High, 4xAA @ 1920x1200 with an average of 43FPS. Mid Range wouldn't be able to run that fast

It's not high end because of the soon-to-be existence of the 6950, 6970 and 6990. The fact that it's a mid-range card keeping up with previous gen high-end cards is the beauty of the I.T. industry and it's ever-evolving technology.

True... let's just call it mid to high end :) Mid end makes me think of my old 260

I am thinking about replacing my 4850 with a 6870 so even though im going from high end to mid end, its a really huge upgrade for me.

Hell ya i mean im upgrading from 512MB VRAM to 1GB VRAM, GDDR3 to GDDR5, a 625mhz core clock to a 900mhz core clock, 1990mhz memory clock to a 4200mhz memory clock, 800 stream processors to 1120, It has all the latest and greatest features, it's faster than the 5850 and cheaper. So you tell me is it worth it, i sure as hell think so. But if i get more money I might get the 6950, hell even the 6970, But for right now im sticking with the 6870 becuase money is an issue.

And it beats the GTX 460 no offense.
