Bottleneck?

Post » Wed Feb 04, 2009 5:03 pm
TBH, I'm just a 14-year old with 500$ to spend xD I want a good card for my money, the 460 is slightly stronger than the 260 so I don't want it much... The 480 is the plan I'm going for, nothing weaker.
I managed to utterly miss this one, although I actually picked up the point anyway. Take it from me, a big pretty number on the side of the box doesn't mean much when your processor will hold you back, which is what you originally asked. You then received several responses saying as much and offering good advice that would be to greater overall benefit, and chose to freak out on the people giving it. If your reason for not upgrading the processor is tech knowledge based as opposed to being completely thick and incapable of comprehending that the 460 is more than sufficient in your system, you should probably say as much.

And odds are good you can find a local shop that can install the processor for you, likely free with the actual purchase of said processor. The 1GB superclock 460 and the quad core would, at the same cost as a 480, give you a larger overall performance increase.

If you don't believe me, research it yourself.

I didn't read the whole thread, as I am sure it is full of wrong information, but to answer the question in the original post, YES, your dual core will be a bottle neck for the 480.

Well, since the rest of the people who tried telling him are idiots, and only you understand computers, could you please enlighten us?

Get an i5 750 or an i7 860, then you wont have to get a new mobo.

Just to reiterate an important point: If you don't know how to replace a processor, get it done by a professional. It isn't necesarily difficult, but if you screw it up, you're out a good chunk of cash.

I wasn't arguing whether he had a clue or not, just pointing out that in his off-hand dismissal of everything else said as wrong, he made himself look like a cocky prick, and just repeated what had already been said a dozen times over, showing his off-handed dismissal to be as incorrect as he assumed anyone else's advice to be.

People tell me that there's a small bottleneck but it's a good combo. I'm going to arm myself with one of those beasts (GTX 480) to survive Crysis 2. This is where the bang for the buck comes into play.

Well, considering you actually got a dozen people on a web forum to all say the same thing on a technical matter, you should probably realize the act of god component and follow that advice, but if you choose not to, whatever floats your boat.

Well, I am a cocky prick so I guess I met expectations.

That said, the track record of this forums is that computer related threads are full of 15 year olds spreading wrong information. Hence, I don't even bother to read the threads and just answer the original question, regardless of how many times it may have been answered in the thread... which I didn't read. I am sure you understand that, now that I scanned the thread and see that you wasted too much of your time talking to someone not willing to listen. There is 2 rules I live by;

Don't wrestle with pigs
Don't argue with idiots

I suggest you adopt them so you don't waste any more of your time talking to those with no clue.

You know you've got a strong following when you no longer need to insist that others are incorrect and that you are correct, until then, you're just tooting your own horn and it looks sad.

That being said, i agree with you, regarding the 661 bottleneck. However, that's only based on the assumption that the resolution used is something mediocre.

For me personally the 400er series isnt that exiting..
I own a 280 and i give a ass-baby about Dx11 and its features.
So be glad with yxour 260 and dont waste your money on high end cards for getting 22 % more performance. Its just not worth it.

Wait until the next or the overnext gpu generation.
Then it will do the price-performance ratio by buying a new card.

As to that, hard to argue, normally I get the same way, but occasionally I get all un-cynical for a short period of time until some portion of humanity reaffirms my belief that man is, by nature, stupid.

And since I'm a cocky prick too, as long as you know it, I can't argue with that either. Its the ones who think they aren't that I hate.
