What do you think about Brink's subject?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 2:04 am

My first post!

I saw a trailer of Brink today and thought that the game stands out from the mass because of its subject. Climate change, overpopulation and their consequences have been brought up in games far too little, and I think Splash damage is doing valuable work discussing the subject in its game. I realize that their main concern is making the game fun and balanced, and that the story will probably come second. However, the setting alone is a reason why I'm following the development of Brink closely, since frankly the gameplay seems very similar to Team fortress 2, which I already own. I didn't see a lot of posts discussing about the setting of the game, so I'm curious what the forum users think about the game's setting. Would be interesting to know why the developers chose the subject too.

Well, I like the story and it's great that they are using the problems of nowadays but it is not my main concern. I hope the game will be balanced. I like the freedom of movement, fast-paced action, class system and team based objective gameplay.
The customization is a great extra as well as the story, but it's not the main reason for my interest.

Somewhere in between It's the main reason I got interested in the game in the first place and It's pretty cool, but I'm more concerned how fun and balanced the game will be. Its not the main reason Im looking forward to the game, the art is. I like the story just because a good story makes a game. Its not generic thats for sure. I hope they flesh it out in between matches.

I just noticed that the art is actually absolutely beautiful! This game has it all!

Story immersion is for RPG's. Immersion in FPS games is all about gameplay.

The shot of the central tower with containers in the foreground is epic. Snake Plissken says, "damn, that's hot"

Seasteading is an interesting topic and it's cool to see it featured in a game but I don't think it's influenced my interest in Brink all that much. The incredible character customization is what really drew me in and the fact that it's an objective based game cinched the deal. A good setting is more than just a cherry on the top but I don't think it's really affecting my enthusiasm much . . . . although I suppose a setting that didn't interest me would dampen my excitement.

I'm surprised to see you mention "overpopulation and their consequences" as something that makes this stand out since it seems like the standard for games, movies, and books with a dystopian urban setting. I suppose Brink is being quite explicit in this regard.

I think the subject is great, one of the reason's I am excited for the game, except I'm evil and all I do is oppress.

The story of the ark is very interesting but it was the graphics that drew me in and the gameplay(or what we've seen) that has kept me here.

Not at all, story immersion is incredibly important in a console FPS, maybe not on the computer, but consoles are a much more social thing, and 8 player co op has me pretty damn excited. Although it was the art, parkour, and customization as well as the story that drew me in, I think it's a big part of this game and looks really good.

but consoles are a much more social thing,

This only applies if you do splitscreen or are playing with a group of guys in the same room, otherwise, it's exactly the same.

And to be more accurate, MP shooter don't need story for immersion, whereas single player shooters like HL2 (greatest single player FPS ever made) need story to survive.

Please explain me that.
How can you make friends while using a mic between the whiny kids? Plus, the pc has something like a keyboard which can be used to chat.

While the story certainly looks interesting, good gameplay is what will keep me coming back.

In my opinion the gameplay doesn't seem to differ much from other popular shooters like Team fortress 2 or Battlefield heroes. To me Brink seems like multiplayer Mirror's edge with less emphasize on parkour and more on shooting, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the SMART system alone wouldn't lure me into buying the game. I'm ACTUALLY interested what they make the story like, and while I usually don't see a reason to play the single player campaign in multiplayer games, Brink just might be an exception for me because of the subject. I would probably even play the game without the shooting. Actually the game could be used as edutainment if it was less brutal. The age limit of 18 kinda spoils that.
