How long do you think the GTS 250 will be able to run games

Post » Mon Mar 02, 2009 7:04 pm

My computer originally came with a 8400GS in which i fried trying to play Crysis on very high in about January. I then bought a a 512mb GTS 250 which i can run Crysis on 1440x900 on everything high dx10. I have been able to run all my other games at these same settings (actually most others very high but crysis is an exception :) ). My cpu is a Q6600 2.4GHz so my CPU is gonna be good for a good while longer but how long do you think a GTS 250 will last before me having to upgrade again?

Not long, but TBH your Q6600 won't last to long either.

It depends on how far you're willing to compromise. It will probably continue to meet minimum requirements for another year or so. The only real question is whether the GPU, CPU, or DX10 will be too far obsolete first.

I plan to ugrade in time for Crysis 2's release, hopefully ATI's new brand which is coming out soon or maybe a gtx 460 around Christmas :). If it is true about my cpu not lasting much longer either looks like i will have to search around for a new one then :(

The GTS250? You probably should have upgraded from that about 8 months ago. ^-^

Why? He says he can play most games on very high, why would he need to upgrade?

If you don't necessarily want that last % of visuals (oh, and did I mention insane performance loss?) which comes with current day DX11 games, you're good for a while. Minimum reqs. will be met with that system for, guessing, two years further.

I think you should upgrade it to something better. The GT320M isn't really a "good" choice for a gaming video card.

thats true - I had a GT 220 and I could play all games - just not on full. But it was ok
A 250 GTS should be OK unless you want more graphical quality...

Just stick with the Gtx 400 series, they'll save you $100's worth of time.

since when has the gtx400 series ever saved anyone money?

o.O

anyone buying a gpu right at this moment should slap themselves with it. Even if you're a hardware manufacturer fanboy (strange people) the arrival of the hd6 series is a huge benefit to everyone, even if just for drastic price cuts; after all the hd6770 looks to be gunning for the hd5870 at the £180 price range, what more info do you need to hold on for a bit?

You guys are noobs. That GTS 250 will continue to run games on high until the next console is out.

I own a 8800gts which is the same card as the 250, and I can run all Unreal3 games, and Crysis on high. Any big blockbuster game I can run on high.

No on is going to up their graphics past the Console ability because that is where the meat of the sales are.

Not quite - the GTS250 is a re-badge of the 9800GTX+. They use the G92 GPU family, yes, but they are far from the "same card".

Having owned the likes of a 4870X2 and now a GTX285, there's no way i could downgrade to a GTS250 level. For starters, i run 1920x1200 resolution, i like my AA and i like my frame rate > 60fps at all times.

The 9800gtx is a rebrand of the 8800gts and the 9800gtx+ is a slightly faster 9800gtx. Bottom line though is that a 250 and an 8800gts are going to have a difference of maybe 5fps minimum.

I am playing Crysis right now on 1920x1080 with all high (which is not the highest of course since there is 1 higher). The fps run between 30-40, which is fine for singleplayer.

But really there are not going to be any games coming out that are more demanding than Crysis for a very long time, thanks to the console systems.

Whilst the 5fps difference may be evident in some cases, it's more accurate to work with percentages, as 5fps could be a 20% increase at low frame rates.

As for the hardware on the cards themselves, the reason i corrected you is because on paper they are significantly different:

8800GTS - G92a 65nm, 650MHz Core, 1940MHz Mem, 512MB, 41GT/s, 62GB/s

GTS250 - G92b 55nm, 738MHz Core, 2200MHz Mem, 1024MB, 47GT/s, 70GB/s
