Lets Talk Hardware...(not really crysis related)

Post » Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:09 pm

So i have a pretty good PC,i don't know much about the detailed specs but here is what i know:
Intel Core 2 Due E8400
Nvidia GeForce 9800
4 GB ram

and i run crysis maxed with no AA at a pretty steady 20 FPS.

So i now want to buy a new one(this one is from the end of 07)
BUT:i'm not going to get a new PC without a DX11 card, which are pretty expensive now,and a quad core, which also,is quite expensive at the moment. so i decided to wait 'till next year,a new gen of hardware will arrive and what i want to buy will be reasonably priced. so my question is: what is the best GPU and CPU arround right now?(GTX 480 and i7ish) and i want to run games such as crysis, at 30 FPS and it at around 1680x1050 AND 3D,if it catches up. this being a crysis forum i expect most of you to help me here.

Well you can get a pretty decent PC that can run crysis at 30 fps at 1680x1050 resolution for around 500-700 euros/dollars, maybe less!

Also it has been posted before that a i7 920, 4 or 6GB of RAM and a GTX260 can run Crysis 2 without a problem. I believe those were the specs of the PCs at Gamescon or PAX.

Since they kinda dumbed down CryENGINE 3 so that consoles can run it, I bet your current PC can run crysis 2 at 30 fps.

As for the best CPU and GPU at the moment, I'd say Intel's i7 980x Hexacore and ATI 5970 4GB VRAM edition.

I would go with the i5 760 ($200 CPU), and a GTX460. That will cost you around $400 and that is without adding on the motherboard and RAM.

Overall you will probably need to drop around $550-600 to get up-to-date hardware. :)

Just pick up the older core 2 quad series instead of the i series...

Less expensive and almsot same results in performance.

Not really.

My 2.8GHz i5 750 absolutely and completely obliterates my 3.6GHz Q9550. I went from 40fps to 60fps in busy, CPU heavy sections of Borderlands. BC2 went up a fair bit in performance also.

What? I have a 9600GT and run Crysis with medium settings (high textures, very high physics and sound, EdgeAA = 2) on a 23" screen and get over 24 fps.

Umm...

Well, I just need to get my new Power Supply and memory before I can install my GTX 460 I've had sitting on my desk for a week. It's painful, yes and the damn things take so long to arrive, too. :l

Anyway, as for what to get... Well, as I said, I have a 23 incher (1920x1080) and I'm expecting the GTX 460 to run [Crysis] at 35fps+ with high settings. As far as I've seen benchmarks, that's a very reasonable goal.

So, if you want to run 1680x1050 with everything maxed out, a GTX 470 would be more than enough. Really. And if you want to run 3D later on (why on god's forbidden name do you want to abuse your eyes in such a manner?!), that should be enough.

As for the processor, well, I have a Q9400. It's an all around good processor, performs really well and it's 45nm. I'm not really into the new i series processors.

thank you all for the answers, and i got the what i thought i will,a decent PC nowadays will cost a lot,i'll probably buy these exact specs in about 6-8 months, when the price will drop.
and as for 3D,i belive it is going to get popular, and like i said about DX11,why would i get a brand new PC and not being able to play whats new? sorry if i use bad english,it's not my native language

Some of your queries depend on your budget.

Concentrate in finance, then you can move about with upgrades.

Plus stick with Core 2 Quad if you want a cheaper icore relative.
