"GFace Social Network"

Post » Tue Mar 10, 2009 5:01 am

Bottom right of the forum. Googled and got nothing except an InCrysis thread, apparently it's a new Crytek trademark. Did a quick search of the website sourcecode and found nothing, so amusingly "powered by gface social network" appears to be a lie for marketing purposes.

Personally I dislike social networking in games, it's usually poorly done and/or irritating.

Thoughts? Expectations? Concerns?

Hmm, GFace...

Could stand for Game Face. Warface anyone? XP

But yeah, I do wonder what it's for. I don't think this is a lie, especially if it's for marketing purposes. I expect something is coming from Crytek. I could be like UPLAY, which houses in game awards for instance, or wallpapers (new or old perhaps). Or it could some sort of social network infrastructure which they're planning on testing. Who knows really.

We should hopefully get some more input about this.

I didn't mean Crytek were making it up, just that there isn't any reference to Gface in the page's source code, so "powered by GFace" doesn't appear to be true.

saw that too and I was wondering about it. Might be a nice feature if it seemlessly connects community with the game.
I think it would be way cooler if Gface was the fake evil company behind their next game - like CryNet. But I really think it's rather something involving networking technology for games.

Hmm... I believe I remember GFace being trademarked by Crytek way back during the summer. :)

No, it's not a possibility. First, if it was a company Google would have produced results for "gface social", which it didn't.

And second, the trademark clearly says "Crytek Entertainment GmbH".

I'm sure everything will be revealed in due time. As for conspiracies about lies and source code of websites... that's a bit pedantic. Why not wait to hear about it before jumping on the nuclear holocaust bandwagon? :)

As for conspiracies about lies and source code of websites... that's a bit pedantic.

1. It says "Powered by Gface social network".
2. The site is a customised installation of PHPBB and Drupal (as confirmed by the page's source code).
3. Therefore "Powered by Gface social network" is not true.

How is it "pedantic" to think that? If a site is "powered by" something, it means the site's features/structure are provided by that project.

As an example, the Steam forum says "Powered by vBulletin" at the bottom, because it runs vBulletin. If it ran PHPBB and said "powered by vBulletin", nobody would think it "pedantic" to point out that the footer was untrue.

Until you know what GFace is or does, you have no idea exactly what or how it "powers". All shall be revealed in due time :)

If Crytek reveal they've added social networking features that aren't in the source code or visible on the website, I'll take what I've said back.

If they announce they're going to add something, I won't.

So you're just attacking them because of that image below which has no real existence on this site?

I don't know if "attack" is the right word to use, but is it really that important to fret about this?

I pointed out that the site is not actually powered by "GFace" (admittedly I could have phrased it better), and was labelled as "pedantic", "jumping on the nuclear holocaust bandwagon" and spreading "conspiracies" by a forum moderator.

The only thing I've said that could be construed as an attack is saying it was a "lie for marketing purposes", and I've clarified that what I mean was "the site's not powered by GFace, so why does it claim to be?" in the third post of the thread.

Maybe their doing something behind the scenes?

Either that, or they're just doing it for fun. :P

My thoughts, we might see some of its featues in the next website update. :)
