Boone and Weapons long range weapons he can use

Post » Mon Mar 16, 2009 3:01 pm

I have not yet done the quest to get Boone as a companion, but I need to know before doing it if I can give him the AMR with incendiary ammo to make him better agains unarmored stuff and armor pearcing buttes against robots. Can he change ammo type?

If I'm not able to give him the AMR, can I give him a normal sniper with a suppressor so he can be as stealthy as I am at the moment? Will he use it?

You can give him any weapon you want.

BUT, I'm not %100 sure that he will use non-standard ammunition.

Boone should equip the AMR easily as long as ammo is given as well.

He will also equip another hunting rifle other than his own, if you fully repair one give it some mods and provide ammo AP, HP, JSP to spec.
He does so automatically all the time for me.

I'll give a try with a non modded version and see if that'll work as well.

Yes non standard is best for any weapon and character, give slugs to Cass, and hand loads to Raul they use those first before "standard" rounds.

Thanks, good to know that he can use the sniper, my strength is too low for it, even with weapon handling. But how can i know what companions use what weapons? I tried giving veronica the unique gauss rifle, as the wiki said her energy weapons skill is 46-100, but she never used it, even when I told her to use ranged weapons.

What health was it at, did she have another ranged gun, and did you place MF cells ( Microfusion cells ) to keep it loaded.

Also did the foes get too close to her.

I just ran the game and gave her one via console, she equiped it and used it to full effect.

Full condition, 100 MF cells.. But there were no enemies near at the time I gave it, never tested it as she didn't want to equip it. Always used her 10 mm pistol as ranged option. But she does equip it in your game? Wihtout console, or only with console?

In my game Boone never used any non-standard ammo - there are mods that fix that issue.
To speak of the AMR - he always preferred the sniper rifle over that gun - maybe if you give him just that he'll use it - but i guess he likes to shoot fast *g*

So you are saying a suppressed sniper rifle with standard ammo might be a better choice? I always use the AP or HP ammos with my suppressed sniper rifle, so I have over 600 standard .308s to give him too.

The weapon was spawned via console and placed in my inventory, with the player. additem code.
Then I gave it straight to V using her companion pop up menu, clicking on the inventory menu option.
She armed it herself as soon as I exited.

I just tested out AMR with Boone, and believe it or not, he uses Incendiary ammo as long as that ammo type is the only one in his inventory! He owns deathclaws with 2 shots, it's really cool to watch them set on fire, that means I know when Boone hits them :) Huzzah for Boone!

Just out of curiosity, will they use nonstandard ammo for their standard guns?

(ex. Will Boone use JSP without giving him a new hunting rifle?)

1 - Silencers do not work on companions.
2 - to make companions use non-standard ammo you have to remove all other types of ammo from their inventory. If they have multiple types in their inventory, they will always use up the standard ammo first. Thus you can't stock them with multiple types of ammo and expect them to use the best. However I'm not sure if they'll use all types of non-standard ammo. I know they'll use AP rounds and some have mentioned them using handloaded/crafted ammo but I don't craft so can't confirm if it's true for all types.

Edit:
I have over 600 standard .308s to give him too.

Companions will go through ammo MUCH faster than you do. Just something to keep in mind.

Now that is something I have no idea about, and I don't know how anyone could find this out.. The physical effect of his standard .308 ammo is the same as JSP.. Not flames like with incendiary ammo.

If 'standard guns' means their default, magic ammo weapon.....my guess would be no. Those weapons are scripted to use the magic ammo and I don't think they'll use anything else with it since, in effect, they always have a supply of "regular' ammo for it (that you can't remove) and thus....
It'd be easy enough to test tho. Just empty their inventory to force default weapon use, drop in 10 rounds of incendiary ammo or whatnot, and let them kill some geckos....then check and see if the ammo count has dropped.

Give him a Marksman Rifle, or even better, the All-American Rifle from Vault 34
He is a beast with that thing, and has a super fast trigger finger.
On several occasions, I was ambushed by Legion Assassins, and Boone had wiped out at least half of them before I knew what was happening.
That's what I give him :disguise:

Unique/hidden companion weapons are set to use "Magical Companion Ammo" instead of the ammo formlists. There are no subtypes for Magical Companion Ammo, so there is no other ammo for them to use with those weapons.

I gave him a ton of weapons and he tends to favor the 12.7mm SMG.
