Creating a server restarts my router

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 2:42 pm

Every time I try to make a dedicated or listen server, my router restarts after a few minutes into the game, thus cancelling the entire fight and preventing me from completing the mission.

If I play Solo, or join a server made by someone else, there are no problems (so far at least)

I don't know if the problem is already known or not, neither if the devs will see my post, but it's really irritating me. t's the only bug/problem I have with the game, apart from that it runs perfectly.
Sould someone know a fix, I'm all ears.

Hey bud, how old is your router? is it being taxed with all the bandwidth causing it to force restart to refresh? I'll try to look more into this issue... unfortunately I haven't had any routers of mine reboot ever on me. I use ONLY Linksys. But I will try to help to my fullest.

Well it is not that old, a few years only, it's a Thomson provided by my ISP (and forced to use that router only by said ISP because of configurations).
I don't think the router is under a heavy load, I forgot to mention that I set the server to private, with only me in it, no bots or anything. Then again, the router is used to heavy loads and during that time, nothing of the sort is happening.

For now the only possibility I see is that some kind of bug is doing something to cause those restarts. What that is, is a more difficult question to answer.

Well... I am not going to say that it is or isn't your router, however... if provided by your ISP, I would go and exchange it for a newer one if not bran-"spankin"-new. I don't like to keep em for more then a couple of years and any of mine I've had only last a couple of years anyway and at some point something starts to go. I would say it's near that point.

As for maybe a bug, have you tried messing with any of the network commands within the game, still seems weird that a game would force restart a router.

I've seen them restart, under heavy load (too much traffic (P2P though)), over heating, age, firmware starting to not be recognized.

Do you have any issues accessing your router, does your pages load correctly, missing any info, last time you have restarted it, replaced it, such.

Though, try with the commands within Brink so see if that's causing it, I would make sure you don't have any other P2P software running or no other downloads, nothing else to ram up your bandwidth/traffic.

This will be a router bug, but try disabling uPnP on the router and see if that helps. BC2 had many issues with broken routers crashing or disconnecting and disabling this helped most.

Thanks for the advice, I tried disabling uPnP and I thought it worked as I could complete a map without restarts. I then tried to setp up a campain game server (still private, populated with bots) and then the router still restarted. So it doesn't seem to eradicate the problem unfortunately.

As for Sinn3246, I have no problems whatsoever with my router when I'm not trying to set up a Brink server. And I have not yet tried with network commands in Brink (at least not console commands). I'll try to search for a list of those commands.

Is your router running the latest firmware?

Its clear Brink is causing the router restarts, but the fault lies with the router and not with Brink as nothing any application on the network can do should cause this unless the router is buggy.

Given this you should really bug your router manufacture to fix their code.
