I came across this article a few days back, seems rather intresting how all these features will be packed into the next generation of consoles:

what irritates me is how the article repeats 2012 as the expected launch year for the next generation of consoles. I thought it was clear that with both Microsoft and Sony getting in on the motion controls hypewagon these two players will try to stretch the lifetime of their current platforms far longer than two more years.

February 2010: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10459250-17.html
June 2010: http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/no-new-xbox-until-2015-697742
September 2010: http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/09/22/xbox-360-successor-720-release-2015-possibly/

a lot of 2015s in the press and the officials talking about 10 year cycles. I see myself as a PC gamer at heart so it makes me sad as the development of new technologies will be held back by a continued current generation of consoles. And I'm not saying I trust these sources more than yours. So 2012 would be great but I think the only chance at the 2 big players jumping into another console-war-marketing-tirade would be for both Kinect AND Move to fail. Like EPICALLY fail. And even if they do both companies will still spend months if not a year trying to make it work anyway, you know how much they invested in this stuff? Launching an entirely new console just 2 years after their motion controls would mean even more losses, investors don't like that.

From what I have heard, the motion controls for the PS3 and Xbox360 both sold very well.

I expect 2015 as the launch year of the new consoles. This makes me a very sad panda. :(

A 10 year life is not that wierd, look at the ps2.
They still sell the games in stores these days and this generation of xbox360 and ps3 will do the same when a new console hits the market i think.

2011/2012 is more realistic for a new console i think/hope.

I don`t see the move as a thing to keep the core console players interested, they would have bought a wii in the first place if they wanted to play these kind of games.

it depends how you look at it, consoles will also stay too, they'll just have new models.

I would argue PC's go out of date/get renewed much faster than consoles do :)

Something we both dis-agree/agree on.
