XP and Difficulty

Post » Tue Apr 07, 2009 12:20 am

I don't mind it that your not rewarded more XP for heightening the difficulty, because I get by playing the game and enjoying it as it is. But I just don't get why you can't be rewarded more XP for having the difficulty up. There's nothing really rewarding putting the difficulty up except the challenge. Why is that?

And a note, this is not a rant.

Thanks.

i think this was to stop sneaky people almost killing stuff on easy then turning it to hard to finish it off for bonus exp? Plus it also makes sure you level up at a better pace

Or for those people that like to play at a higher difficulty, but get annoyed at the extra XP it gives when leveling up is already too fast as it is.

I always thought that in Fallout 3 Very Hard should've rewarded less XP, now that's difficulty

But really, the way Bethesda does difficulty (and Obsidian used the same method in NV) is stupid. It isn't a difficulty slider, it's a balance slider. On the left the game is ridiculously biased to the player, and on the right it is ridiculously biased to the enemies. Can't i have balanced difficulty (without mods)? :)

Undecaffinated and myself got into a long thread about how silly it was to grant more XP for killing on higher settings..
When it's apparent that those players most likely want a challange and those that set it lower wish not to be penalised by being weaker in stats later on.
This was some months ago, the gist ended up that Very hard was its own reward, and those on lower settings would need a boost at some point.

So in all this.
Plus it also makes sure you level up at a better pace

And definitely this..

They should give you less XP you get to lvl30 way to fast I'm only half way done and already 30. They should give less for quest and killings or add more lvls. I have still more things to do but I'm not going to get rewarded for doing everything else there is to do.

I was thinking, even with 80 hours down on a playthrough and Dead Money installed but not played, am I the only one who thinks you gain xp pretty quickly. Mostly because there's a ton more quests and people to rack up xp quick from.

Personal thing I guess, not trying to answer OP. Trying not to reach cap. I mean I have a ton of content left.

Yes, if anything Betheseda should raise the level cap to 50. I reached level 30 in both games not even half way through. Just takes killing a few tough opponents at level 1 to 5 as well as taking the swfit learner perk.

Because the game already showers you in XP? Besides, it's a broken system as mentioned.

I find it odd that many have had characters hit the mark half way through.

By not fast traveling, heading north at the start and killing 50XP creatures from level 1 - 6, I still have to hit level 24+.
This dispite walking around the map 3 - 5 times, killing everything.

I play on normal, are any of those hitting 30 half way through playing on a higher setting?
Just check the XP before a kill then after, maybe it's a fault in the new XP handling system.

Despite me initially complaining that XP gain is too fast, the game has always ended before i could reach level 30. The highest i've gotten is 27  I'd say current XP gain is pretty good, you have to go out of your way to get to level 30.

Well, I'm talking all the quest & not just the main ones. If you just follow the main story line, hitting level 30 before the end is very unlikely. Although I did get there on my first play through of FNV for some reason. I think I was at level 14 when I finished FO3 the first time ( I didn't even know side quests existed in this game).

The point of a harder difficulty is to make it harder, increasing XP just makes it easier again. I'm using Arwen's Realism Tweaks, which makes the game a whole lot harder and cuts all my XP gains down to 1/4th. :P

No I understand, I was saying this was with all the non NV + freeside quests..
You know the Outpost, Novac, Sloan... etc, and making circuts of the maps to get to places, rather than FT.
I still hit 30 a while before the Dam, but more akin to only 20% - 30% of the main quest
Spoiler
post Benny or later
is done at level 30, with the rest of the filler side quest and areas already done.

That third of a main quest is not half way through, more like a sixth of the game at most.

I have to disagree with you on that one. I am playing on hard, walking everywhere, and very little fast travel. I am 104 hours into my 2nd character and am at level 28 with my own level slowing mod that requires 3x more xp than in vanilla. If I'dve been playing vanilla, I would've been at level 30 a looong time ago, and lost all interest in playing that character as well.

I might be able to agree with you if you run everywhere, fast travel alot and only do the minimal amount quests possible, but the way I tend to play (I did it this way in FO3 as well) a level slowing mod is required.

Yep, same here as that's my style as well. Add in mods that increase the playable area of the world such as A World of Pain or increase the number enemies you face like Increased Wasteland Spawns (or both together!) and an XP decreasing mod of some sort isn't even optional anymore it's a requirement. I did the Repconn quest with IWS installed but without a leveling mod and I went up over 3 full levels by the time I was all done. This is on one single quest in a single area, never mind all the other quests in the game and simply wandering the Wasteland.

Now granted that was a combat heavy quest with many many enemies to face but still you'll cap out in that type of situation before you've seen 1/10th of the gameworld if you don't do something about the XP windfalls in the base game. Slowing down leveling, removing the level cap altogether, and expanding the world to explore and the enemies to face suits my style just fine.
