Someone at Crytek MUST have played THIS GAME

Post » Mon May 04, 2009 12:36 am

It was called BREAKDOWN
watch this video and tell me Crytek weren't atleast "inspired" by it:

Picking up weapons and climbing ladders in Crysis 1, grabbing onto ledges in Crysis 2 - almost identical animations are found in this video. Also note that the player has a body and shadow, not even in Halo 2 did the player have a DECENT shadow. The NPC chick even has self shadowing. VERY impressive on the original Xbox.

interesting find, i must admit my first thought on reading before viewing was how many different ways can you climb a ladder? but still, quite interesting :)

I think it goes without saying that we did not see this and then decide to make some minor changes and produce Crysis, it's possible something in this game influenced someone at Crytek, then again it's possible no-one is aware it even exists, inspiration comes from many places and we'd have to ask ALL the devs to find out if someone came up with a particular idea based on this game.

It certainly seems to bring some original ideas to the table for it's time, but since it's a relatively unknown game it must have had some pretty big flaws too.

fair enough :-D
i meant: there are few games that animate ladder climbing, even the halo games which feature player body and shadow don't do this. i know practically nothing about breakdown except watched a couple more youtube videos so no idea if it was just badly marketed or really didn't deserve to sell.

Whatever happened to this game? The video. didn't seem that bad at all. Was its developer or publisher responsible for its downfall.

apart from whatever went on publishing-wise some other factors probably affected this game:
- the industry was smaller and most importantly the audience was way -literally- immature (breakdown was rated M) back then
- FPS were far from mainstream
- innovative and unusual games always have a hard time selling copies

EDIT: grammar and clarification

Wow, I love the look of this game, I WANT IT. I've never even heard of it before and I feel sorry for it as a game not getting the right attention.

It should be re-released on the xbox live marketplace as a classic game or something, beacause I think more people now would appreciate a game like this, I know I would. I'd also think quite a few games may have taken influences from this game, that's not a bad thing, influences are what make the video game industry move forward.

as i've said before the FPS genre wasn't as dominant back then. so if it was rereleased on XBLA oder PSN now it would definitely get more attention. but i don't think that's ever going to happen. only indie games and the remakes of absolute classics get a chance on thos destribution platforms at this time.
