So to those who waited for a "darker" game and stuff, looks like you win. However, I'm gonna speak my mind about the graphics: That is the same engine they used for Oblivion, they openly admit to using Gamebryo but insist they "heavily modified" it or something. That kind of PR claims, my ass. If you look at
you should be able to see that on the right side of that building there are light spots. If they finally had a decent shadow system those wouldn't be there.
And for a more authentic overview of how the game is gonna look:
That's by no means a bad screenshot. But look closer. It's just Oblivion with less of the softening bloom and a particularly nice skybox. It looks more realistic but honestly not "better".
After the repetetive non-innovation they sold as "Fallout 3" not to speak of New **** Vegas (though I heard that wasn't Bethesda, they outsourced it?) I have no confidence left that they'll truly improve.
I liked Oblivion. "Liked". And 4 years later this looks to be Oblivion 1.5. Despite what other impressions from the screenshots I've read I see no real improvement and in terms of gameplay Oblivion wasn't at all the immersive RPG everyone acted like it was. It was full of bugs and quantity instead of quality. Remember that one dungeon? Yes? That's because you had to clear it about 50 times. Remember how all characters looked kinda the same (and very bad at that)? It hat the ingredients to make you addicted with small enough levelling steps and the occasional new weapon or piece of armor but even that - Low Carry Limit! it was the definition of a game that ruins your fun for no good reason. Did it benefit from limiting the amount of weaponry and armor you could carry? Not one bit. The amount that you could carry was still nowhere near "realistic" but frequently caused me to have to trace back my steps so I could retrieve a piece of equipment (say a decent sword) that I had to let go earlier and after another piece (say a great helmet) wore down didn't want to leave behind. I haven't even mentioned the ridiculous inventory itself, or the much-critisized levelling of enemies, the tedious Vampirism quest or the funky save points.
I know I'm a little late to complain about Oblivion but I think it's a relevant point now more than ever seeing as how much people on this forum complain about Crysis 2 despite having never played it. Oblivion got high review scores and a huge community still looks back to it as a classic RPG. Crysis 2 on the other hand shows no signs of bugs (Crysis was already a fairly solid game from that standpoint), and looks to generally well engineered adventure in the spirit of part 1. You can say what you want about the changes they allegedly made - what they are showing seems to be a great game.
I'll be waiting for gameplay footage without prerendered or staged fluff now before I change my mind about the road they're taking with Skyrim. I think Crysis fans have it pretty good compared to people who were waiting for another Elder Scrolls.
