FOV svcks!

Post » Tue Jun 23, 2009 6:27 pm

So seriously, does the field of view concern anyone else in the single player? I find that the majority of games these days limit the field of view to an almost claustrophobic effect. Crysis 2 is as bad im my opinion as battlefield bad company 2 or medal of honor. Yet every pc player insists on a larger field of view, whereas console gamers are either uniformed or have no qualms about it. I on the other hand can't stand it! Does anyone else feel the same?

Crytec you blew me away with the first crysis. You guys nailed everything ,controls, graphics etc. I made crysis the standard of how Fps could be done right. I thought you guys understood the details and importance of controls effecting gameplay. Yet I find many flaws in crysis 2 concerning the controls. A very apparent input lag. Something that was rectified in the multiplayer release, but upon booting up the single player i find the same input problems and then some. Such as reloading your weapon doesn't allow you to sprint, except with the shotgun? Or the annoying delay of animation before your weapon switches. Or the excrutiatingly long power jump input(which was included with the first demo and then changed to a shorter input in the second demo and final release )I don't no why this hasn't been brought up yet on these forums, but i have vid documented the problems and will post them soon. Finally my greates concern to you Crytec is the fad you guys fell into with the crappy field of view. I thought you guys understood..

Actually I noticed it in Multiplayer for this game. Cant say I feel the same way about BC2... but in this game where the action is much faster and the corners of the screen much more important (spotting invisible players) you really feel the FOV is small. At the same time, everyone else is in the same position, and it does sort of add a panic to the gameplay which I dont mind.

While I agree, I cant really say I find it as important as you do.

Sorry i wasn't more clear, I find the multiplayer has atleast a 5 to ten degree larger FOV than single player. That was were my concern was coming from. The single player FOV.

Your topic states that "FOV svcks!" yet you did not mention the FOV at all or explain the problem. I would rather not play a FPS game as a character that has eyes in the back of his head. Would make the gameplay suffer IMO. It is also rather hard for game designers to mimic peripheral vision in a video game so I do not see how the FOV cannot "svck" and keep the game fun at the same time.

As for the other issues and problems that you spoke of, they are valid complaints and I commend you for them.

KILLZacular I'm sorry if the statement FOV svcks doesn't denote the obvious answer that any FOV smaller than 90 degrees is quite jarring. To the effect that it reduces not only awareness, but makes manuvering in close quarters very disorientating. The effect of a small FOV is tolerable ,say in a game such as operation flashpoint. Though in a game where combat and level design consists of many close encounters of enemies and enviroment you have a problem.

Its hard to reply to that statement because it is very um..well irrelavent based on logical design descisions of all FPS games. You only need a 90 FOV to mimic the eyes forward degree of sight. Mostly the rest of the degrees are filed in the brain as peripheral vision and would obviously distort the image unless you put the screen very close to your face.
and blendbassist I don't think you understand FOV because Reach also suffers from a small field of view.
