Fallout: New Vegas' Soundtrack

Post » Mon Jun 29, 2009 8:41 pm

I don't know how many others have noticed this, but being a veteran Fallout player, I noticed that a lot of the ambient tracks in New Vegas are from Fallout 1 and to a lesser extent, Fallout 2. For example, Vault 22, Freeside, Lucky 38 penthouse, and Nipton all play tunes from Fallout 1.

I don't know, but personally I really like that Obsidian did this. It makes me feel nostalgic, but also gives the game more of that "Fallout" feel reminiscent of F1 and F2. Fallout 3 was good and all, but the ambient soundtrack in that game really did not fit the Fallout universe. It was basically a copy/paste of Oblivion's soundtrack, which goes well with that kind of game, but not a Fallout game.

I don't recall the Lucky 38 music being from any Fallout's past. I've been to every zone in F1 and F2 and don't recall that track. I wish I knew were it was from though, I love it's haunting 'Ghosts of the past' feel.

Also, I beg to differ. Mark Morgans music in the old Fallouts worked, but that music just doesn't work in a format like F3 and F:NV. I take it back, SOME of his songs didnt work, moments like in Nipton, and at the gate to The Strip, it worked. But as general overworld music, it was just annoying. I prefer Inon Zurs music being the ambient tracks in this game. But that is just me.

Edit: It wasn't a 'copy paste' from Oblivion. Oblivions composer was a different person, and it's tracks were more medieval and dream worldish. Fallout 3's music is very 'reminiscent of the days before' kind of feel.

Yeah no problem.

And about what you were saying, the F3 ambient music was very nice, but some of it really did not fit. Like when you're being attacked by a lone molerat, and super dramatic music starts playing. And how cool would it have been to hear the Vault 13 music playing in Vault 101 instead of what was used?

That's something I think should be fixed when you fight an enemy. I hated wheeling around to the dramatic music to see....a bloatfly. And honestly, not really. I prefered the soft instrumental stuff on the Vault 101 radio broadcast. It added a sense of that day to day normality it tries to convey. I think some of the F1-2 songs are best left in the past.

Too specialized. Necropolis theme (for example) is not one for casual listening, but its incredibly effective at getting the mood across while you're there.

I think of all the FO tracks, my favorite is 'The City of Lost Angels' ~Boneyard track ~after that Trader's Life, and Khans of New California. (Hub and Raiders camp)

I think the way Obsidian specialized a large portion of older tracks is more a blessing. Mainly since personally I dislike Morgans music as 'roam the wasteland' music. But the Necropolis theme in Nipton, the BoS theme from Fallout at The Strip entrance gates was very mood setting, it set the theme for the very Gated Community feel Freeside vs The Strip felt. Also, the Glow theme Billy so kindly linked me to presents a very mysterious and elusive atmosphere for Mr. House. I know there are alot of other tracks in the game as well, but these are key examples of my meaning.

I'm surprised they didn't find a use for "Desert Winds" or "Biggest Little City In The World".

I was very pleased at the times "Underground Troubles" and "Metallic Monks" would appear though. I wish they used "Metallic Monks" at the Hidden Valley Bunker though. It suits the Brotherhood the best.

In my opinion Metallic Monks goes well with Freeside. But you're right, it should have played at the Hidden Valley Bunker instead, because it makes more sense. In its place in Freeside, I think the song that plays in New Reno (Biggest Little City in the World) should have been used.

Oh no, I agree that Metallic Monks works wonderfully with the Freeside gate guards. Sometimes I think it's cool to just relax there and watch the guards and listen to Metallic Monks.

I liked it too. Nothing tops the car's song, though.

Anyone here been to Mark's website?

http://www.markmorganmusic.com

He has a CD quality playlist with "Radiation Storm", Dreamtown, California Revisited, City of Lost Angeles, and Flame of the ancient World.

A really well done remix, but it doesn't sound as 1990s as Mark Morgan's version.
