Quick question: Does the full body explosion that occurs when you get a bloody mess torso shot only occur for critical hits or is it random? I'm wanting to maximize the full body explosions by taking Center of Mass and Bloody Mess, but unfortunately my luck is low and the critical multiplier on my favored weapon is relatively low.

IIRC torso explosions still happen without critical hits.
