First, this is going to be full of nerd rage, and rightfully so.

I began installing the GotY edition for my PC at 3:30pm today, pretty much right after work. My PC Specs are as follows:

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @ 2.66ghz
4gb DDR2 Ram
ATI Radeon HD4850 512mb

After installing both discs, I got the following error message:

"The ordinal 5360 could not be located in the dynamic link library xlive.dll."

So I thought to myself, "Sloppy install - time to uninstall and reinstall."

So I do just that.

Now, I insert disc 2, and begin installing the DLC. On "Fallout3.esm", it begins to go EXCRUTIATINGLY slow, so slow that it looks like it's going nowhere. I cancel the install and start again.

This time, it gets right to the end, and hang up on B09.bik. I cancel the install, and AGAIN, start again.

This time, it makes it!

So I load up the game.

"ERROR: The ordinal 5360 could not be located in the dynamic link library xlive.dll."

JESUS CHRIST.

So after poking around a lot, I find it's related to the crappy "Games for Windows Live" that's forced into the game. I find a mod that disables it, and guess what? At 5:15pm (1hr45minutes later), I'm finally able to get into my game.

I then find out my DLC isn't active now that GFWL (the program that keeps me OUT of my game) is deactivated. I've now got to use ANOTHER program to force a roundabout way for the game to detect my legitimate DLC.


NOTE TO BETHESDA: No more G4WL! It keeps me OUT of my game. Second: Clean up your sloppy ****ing installs. A while back, I had to go through several installs of Oblivion before it finally started working properly.

OK, first off, "nerd rage" doesn't get you very far around here. It's a fair bet that anyone posting in the Issues forum (I'll helpfully move your thread) is by definition going to be annoyed about something, but if you have several hundred shouty people you just end up with a splitting headache.

What is going to help you is concrete information. You've posted your spec, but more often than not problems are caused by having the wrong drivers. Can you post a full dxdiag? It's required for almost every thread like this.

Hopefully in the meantime maybe someone will recognise the text of your error message and work out what the problem is.

Just install the latest http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/live/Pages/livejoin.aspx. If you have Windows updates enabled, it should actually have already updated itself.
Also G4WL is here to stay. It's a plattform used by many high profile devs to distribute their DLCs and to verify a games legitimacy. It's basically the PC counterpart to XBox Live Market place and Playstation Network Store.

I wonder if you will feel compelled to take the Nerd Rage perk when the time comes?:P

srsly tho, would you be surprised, the Fallout 3 has like jut generally epicly bad data, and when you throw DLC into the mix, without use of actual DLing, well, good luck installing my friend...

It's a lousy, jury-rigged port of their XBL Market. Just there so they can leverage the whole mess and try to grab some market share from Steam and similar systems. Doesn't work well, gets in the way, etc.

There were plenty of digital-distribution schemes for PC that worked just fine. M$ didn't need to mess things up by trying to splice the Xbox and PC together further.

It isn't that hard to solve these issues.

First, update GFWL(you used an alternative).

Then, move the DLC files from your GFWL folder and into your Data folder, and activate the esms like if they were normal mods.

Yeah, and someone who has very little computer knowledge is supposed to know to do all this stuff. They couldn't put a "Update Windows Live" button on the Launcher, could they? They couldn't make it auto-update before failing to launch the game, could they?

No. It's gotta be a pain to navigate.

I'm also now looking around for some mods to upgrade this game. Example: The HUD looks like a console game, not a PC game - but I guess this is why Bethesda made the GECK, so they only had to do half the effort they needed to. Thank god for people like DarN.

I do agree about the HUD though...

Yeah GfWL is useless but there's a way to erradicate it. Get Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM) it's got a feature to fool the game into thinking you have Games for Windows Lame. Also you'll find FOMM handy if you plan on using mods. While you're at it, get Fallout 3 Edit as well.

Of course this won't be the end of your troubles as the game is buggy as heck but it's a start.

One last thing and remember this always. gamesas isn't going to fix the game. There's no point in writing them or calling and complaining. It's all up to the modders now and they can only do so much. But the game is still fairly new so there's still hope.
