What if you could upgrade a console?

Post » Sat Jan 09, 2010 9:37 am

As of now you can't upgrade a console beyond the hdd, but what if you could upgrade graphics cards, ram, etc...
For example, you buy a console that can play a game fine just like a normal 360 or ps3 for a normal price. However say youre not satisfied with the systems performance for some games or want to enhance your experience you could get a new card and replace the stock one inside along with any other parts but its still something you can play in youre living room and enjoy the same games. (just an idea i was kicking around with my friend and was curious what you people think of it)

Consoles are like macs, you can't upgrade them, you could just get a desktop computer and hook it up to a TV.

I would shoot myself in the foot, and destroy my computer out of pure anger, and then cry about it. And then probably build another one XD.

I can imagine Sony and MS bringing out new versions of the 360 and PS3 with better GPUs in them. Same CPU and memory, just better graphics chip. Then, new games that were optimised for it, could run at 720p on the normal versions of the consoles, but 1080p on the "HD" versions of the consoles.

It could be a half assed way to extend the life of the hardware, without spending money on the development of having a whole new system.

Still, I don't think it would really work, because most consolers probably think to themselves "huh, whut? My console is ALREADY HD, isn't it?"

Also, one of the reasons to put a more contemporary GPU in the consoles, would be for 60 fps, instead of 30. But the CPUs may have to be replaced as well for that, since they may be near bottlenecked at 30 fps, as it is...

but anyway, we all laugh at the idea of upgrading the memory, cpu and gpu on a console. But they could design the next gen of consoles to have little door with 3 cartridge slots, that are as easy as replacing a SNES cartidge. That would be a lot easier than upgrading a normal computer.

Seriously, if microsoft offered that and keyboard/mouse support. PC gaming could be pretty much finished...

I say they should work on their next gen consoles. I really hate it how they just released the Kinnect and Move, made no plans of a new console, so five more years of crappy graphics for popular games.

and in my opinion, PC gaming will never EVER die. It may come to the point of every game being released being a crappy port, but those powerful 3D graphics cards have other purposes as well, their existance isn't just purely for gaming.

Please, God no. One of the main things I love about my Xbox is the fact I don't have to upgrade it, change settings, worry about RAM and CPU and graphics card and all that other crap. I can buy a game, and I know I'll be able to play that game, and I know that everybody will be using the same system. Adding upgrades would ruin the whole point of consoles, you might as well just get a PC.

Upgrade a console? I wouldn't even touch that crap, PC all the way. Who cares about outdated hardware and low processing power, lol

Contrary to popular opinion, a decent gaming computer is cheap. Mine was $500 and I can run any game nowadays (although this 22" monitor is wreaking havoc on my tiny GeForce 315.... ) albeit on low settings.

Some people prefer the games on console and not having to worry about pricing ($500 is ridiculous to many people, and that's at the lower end of the spectrum and ignores the upgrades you'll have to get) and graphic settings. Live with it.
