Quick Companion Question : Fallout: New Vegas

If I give a follower a more powerful gun than their default gun and it uses the same ammo type. Eg Boone's default hunting rifle uses .308 if I give him a Sniper Rifle will I need to supply him with .308 rounds?

Companion's gun uses companion magic bullet, so you can give Raul Boone's Rifle....
