Trapdoor spiders in FNV, a possibility?

Post » Mon Apr 12, 2010 11:19 am

Aye you might be right or it might be a toss up still as the first one gets pulled in then the tunnels is well blocked by a body I edited my first post and do not think you saw why i do not think the in game Cazadors are spider hunter type , or maybe just not anymore.
still you have a good point.

Taking all bets heheh I sure could see this event passing a wastelanders time and making us both rich men.

Almost everything in new vegas seems to have evolved or mutated from an existing stock. Cazadors have mutated from tarantula hunters, the wasps that lay eggs in spiders. Or they share a great deal in common with. Deathclaws from experimentation/lizards ect. Most things don't seem to get new traits from the base species. Just enhanced and supremely powerful.

I can't see the spiders somehow magically developing poison resistance over night, or a sticky coating, and the worse offender is the sticky ball shooting. Maybe... like a line to catch prey, or drop a net from above which some spiders CAN do. Adds a sense of realism to the creature.

Ever heard of the Bolas Spider? It makes a string of silk, and tops it off with a gooey blob of sticky web and goo, then, when a moth flies by, attracted by the goos smell, the spider spins the bola around and freaking lassos the moth from mid air and pulls it to its web.

Wasn't it argued a while back that spiders should be excluded from the game in favour of those suffering from Arachnofobia?

I'm all for spiders, but I do recall this being an issue...

i'm always for new creatures to kill, but please, no more insects. they look too good (as in disgusting and repulsive and make my skin crawl) and the sound effects are equally disturbing. i even hate running into the weakling radroaches.

that being said, i do like the ideas here, especially about a more cunning enemy using bait.

I'm never walking on the ground again!!!!!
There is a spider that shoots fine razor like hairs out its silkhole at prey, they can blind you, and it is a big spider but not found in the states.

Arachnophobia is exactly why we need spiders. Ghouls, Deathclaws, Barkscorpoins, Ants.... these are not scary. Give me spiders.

I think spiders should be in....these little guys are one of the top survivors in nature. they will in fact be here longer that humans will. so i for one think it makes sense that not only should they be in the fallout universe but they should in fact THRIVE.

Gamgee can I just point out something to you? This is 'Fallout', We have Gecko's that can breathe fire...

I'm pretty sure it could also have Spiders that can use their silk in interesting ways..

Edit: Just saw the 'overnight' thing regarding the venom immunity.. LOL You are kidding right? We have giant wasps, giant geckos (that can spit fire) ant's with the same power.. There are so many things that are kind of absurd in Fallout and yet, to save a losing argument you say something as silly as 'overnight'.. Why would it have to be 'overnight'? Hell, it doesn't have to be natural...

I think someone is more interested in winning a forum argument than actually thinking about a cool enemy for Fallout... :S

I'd really rather not. Giant spiders is a stupid idea in my opinion. I don't find the 'Trapdoor Spider' idea to much either. I'd rather have an interesting creature/foe added instead.

Aren't Cazadores said to be new to the Mojave region? Even if they were efficient spider killers there could be spiders remaining. Hell, Cazadores are efficient human killers and there's still a few knocking around.

Fun fact for the arachnophobic -- did you know that, with the exception of the polar regions, you are never more than three feet from a spider?

If we're voting on new bugs, I want centipedes.

Neat, I evidently haven't until now. So how would that behavior evolve? It can't be mutated in... really. It's more of something you learn. How exactly would it stop a Cazador rush? Like I said, spiders just can't be competitive with those bastards around. Also I take it as a compliment to their nastiness when Spiders have been wiped off the face of the Mojave desert in a short time span by the arrival of the Cazadors. Amusing really. I don't see Spiders being able to survive unless they learn group behavior. If they gain some kind of venom immunity or resistance (magically) then they wouldn't need quite as large a group.

Also it's not unlikely that something can learn to breathe fire, or grow in size. Those are all plausible. There are beetles that can shoot corrosive burning chemicals that burn a lot, hell a particular combination of gut bacteria could already produce flammable gas. One mutation to allow the digestive track to allow the gas to seep up and out of the body in flammable bursts of fire. Though lighting the gas is another matter. I'm sure I could find some way to do it, but I'm really tired.

Last time there was a debate, there was so much debate about the wasp eatting them, not even getting the chance to kill the player or anything, well thats where the trap-door spider solution steps in and plus it adds the element of stealth in FNV. what do you think?
