New Patch: Questions and Comments

Post » Sun May 09, 2010 9:05 am

This thread is for the devs to hear from everyone who has downloaded the new patch. We can report problems, give praise or ask questions.
Since there are already threads dedicated to Weapons Balance adjustments and complaining about the missing DLC bug in the original patch, please do not post about these topics unless you have a specific question that has not been addressed.

I'm on XBox but all platforms can report.

1) The random arm movement has not disappeared entirely but seems much improved.

2) There appear to be fewer enemies than before (Convicts in Primm, Cazadores along Lake Mead, Lakelurks on Scavenger Platform). Was this necessary to improve performance?

3) The strip seems to have a few more people on it; nice.

4) Experienced a severe frame-rate drop at the Mesquite Mt campground (after pitched battle); game appeared ready to crash but I was able to fast travel out and problem ended.

QUESTION: As I was ready for a new character anyway, I erased all my saves and Dead Money and then downloaded the original new patch. I have reinstalled DM and the Classic Pack. My question is this: do the developers know if I will experience problems after playing DM?

All in all, very happy with the patch. Thanks to everyone at Obsidian and Bethesda who put so much extra work into it. This has got to have been a frustrating experience for you guys.

-Insert long winded complaint about how this patch broke my (Insert system here) and how I demand a full refund and will sue Bethesda and Obsidian for fraud on a global scale, followed by rude anger and et cetera-

Serious answer: In regards to your question, usually what you did, IE reinstalling and etc, usually fixes everything and lets the game work with the patch from the start. Most of the time it works, sometimes it doesnt. Give it a whirl and tell us your findings.

I've read that the original patch may eject you out of the DLC and put you back in Goodsprings. I don't know about the patched patch. I'd wait until you finish the DLC if I were you (I don't think the patch affects DM, anyway).

I'm planning on doing Dead money in a week or so, unless Honest Hearts comes out (...); I'll be sure to mention it if the game gets screwy.

I like alot of the modifications that were made and I've found myself actually using guns that I previously considered to be useless weapons. A couple of bugs to report still though.

*The minigun's sound still doesn't work properly and is very annoying.

*The game always freezes when I fast travel to Nelson, not sure if this effects anybody else or not at this point...at least the large amount of legion troops aren't still spawning inside Camp Forlorn Hope.

*The quest "Hard Luck Blues" still doesn't work properly and when you ask for a reward from a certain someone after finishing it he gives you nothing and the dialogue loops.

*The weapons that are supposed to be non lethal like bean bag rounds for the shotgun will still kill and decapitate enemies rather than knock them unconscious.

I think they didn't add any quest/game bugs fixes in the description because there aren't any. What did this patch really do? Change weapon balances? That can be done in 4 minutes. They're pulling the wool over our eyes while after 6 months still not fixing the broken game they sold.

It's my understanding that the main purpose of this patch was to improve overall performance (frame rate, CTDs, etc) rather than address quest bugs. The weapons tweaks have received the most attention and been discussed the most by the devs, but I think that's because they are the most immediately apparent adjustments. Most of the patch is under the hood, if I have understood the situation.

And thanks for complaining in my 'no complaints' thread. Very cool.

Overall from what little I've seen I like the patch. (pc) Game runs slightly smoother, weapons changes, etc. Seems like I haven't noticed as many instances of enemies clipping into the ground and doing the spaz corpse dance and even a few spots where items would fall into the ground aren't sinking anymore (but some still are)...of course, that could be coincidental with a new game, dunno. Haven't tested many quests, dialogues etc yet so can't speak to bugs of that sort.

The only think I don't like is that the cazador poison sound still plays (very loudly) even when I can't see the darn bugs/they're not attacking me/I'm far away. I assume they're attacking something in the distance that I can't see, but I find it annoying. Nothing major tho.

The game clock is still broken and days last 24 hours from whatever time it is when you start up a save.

I Just downloaded the new patch for the 360. Prior to the patch, I tried to wipe out the Powder Gangers at the NCRCF using Veronica and ED-E as companions. The game would completely lock up my 360 when I would try to save. This effectively rendered a save block unusable.
I would like to thank the developers for fixing this issue!

I'm on PC. Observations so far:

Love what they did with weapons stats. The 9mm SMG lasts forever, the Service Rifle now a viable gun. Can't wait to try That Gun in its new incarnation.

Ammo availability changes: there seems to be a LOT more 9mm and a lot less 5.56 for sale now. I used to have under 500 rounds of 9mm and close to 1000 rounds of 5.56 by the time I reached the Mojave outpost, but now it's more like 1500 rounds of 9mm and just over 400 rounds of 5.56, despite the fact that my current character makes liberal use of his 9mm SMG. "Special" rounds like .223 and .44 Special may now be worth a look as they come in loose rounds. Some ammo boxes (most notably in Primm) which used to have a large quantity of 5mm ammo now have a small quantity of random ammo. Ammo price is enough to bankrupt an early character, but it makes realistic sense. I guess I'm just going to have to change my shopping habits, and get Jury Rigging earlier.

Creature/bad guy spawns: there seems to be less enemy spawns in outdoor locations, like convicts in Primm. On my first visit to Nipton, only one Bark Scorpion spawned in the trailer park, but on my second visit the remaining two spawned correctly, each in his usual place. Indoor spawns seem to have remained unchanged.

Enemy armament appears to have been changed. Vipers now carry Grenade rifles and 40mm ammo (!!!), which was completely unheard of pre-patch. They're pretty damn accurate with them, too. I suppose it's good for Explosives-oriented characters which up until now were discriminated against, but I foresee a sharp drop in the popularity of Small Frame trait.

The problem of creatures respawning after save/load has remained and may have gotten worse. I had a whole gang of Vipers respawn on me at the Nipton Road Pit Stop. I'm developing a habit of never leaving the game unless I am in a location where stuff doesn't spawn.

I now get very frequent "double draws" when changing weapons, which I never had before.

i have one major problem and thats the lack of enemies in the overall game i mean i literally wait 3 days in game all the time just to fight the muties over at the mountain i mean u guys have to admit u can clear the entire mojave before the enemies respawn well at least when your maxed out they could a couple of more deathclaws here and there, more legion/ncr patrols, more geckos, vipe gangs, more fiends, hell ill even fight a buttload of cazadors just for the fun of it my grenades are getting a little dusty btw.it svcks that they made the weapons more dynamic but there just isnt that many targets to use them .

PC - i7, Nvidia fermi card, 8gb RAM, win7 pro sp1 x64:

Since latest steam patch a few days ago, I cannot enter Camp McCarran without the game CTD.
Have tried removing all trace (inc save games and lingering registry entries, as well as loose files) of game and re-installed - still CTD whenever I try to enter this place. It happens around (if you imagine a line from) the first set of doors into the terminal (where the bounty guy originally stands - I also believe there's a trigger at those doors for some characters and quests) to the wall opposite.

Has totally ruined the game as I can no longer progress or play it past a certain point.

Have never hacked, cheated, used mods (apart from Caravan pre-purchase pack) this game, and it was running totally fine up until this latest patch.
I've yet to explore other places, but since all my quests at the time surrounded Camp McCarren, I'm not sure I can be arsed to re-start and play the whole thing again, as I've played over 110 hours and not even reached Bennie at the strip.

Done everything else, mind, like killing the legendary deathclaw with chance's knife - I had to plan 4 levels ahead to get the perks to do that...

New games, from a clean install (using both old saves and from a new start) where I head straight to the Camp will crash at the same place exactly the same every time.

Game is now unplayable for me, I'm afraid. :(
Is there any way I can please fix this, or is this a case of "go find another game to play, you've had your fun even if you didn't get to finish it 100%"?
Can I roll back the patch and play the old version til the finish, then trash the game? I really want to finish this game, but just can't now.
Sux big time :/

That's been occurring for me for months. :)

Only if you backed up/made copies of the .exe/.esm files before patching.

Does it still crash if you travel to McCarron via the railway from the Strip? I know you said you haven't been to the Strip yet...maybe you could make a new save, go there, and see if getting in the back way works?

(edit)Something similar happens to me in another place in the game, now & then (pre-patch) & for some reason approaching from a different direction makes it go away. Thought it was a mod thing for me tho...

Damn - nope, didn't do that. I think the version on my laptop isn't patched yet, but it will be as soon as I launch Steam. I'll see if I can get it off that.

I'll try that - thanks. Last time I was at the monorail place, I disarmed a bomb and killed the Centurion for his armour after successfully interrogating him without violence - for some reason, it let me carry Chance's knife into the room when i revisited, although everything else was stripped... :/

Will let you know if it works, coming from the strip - I'll reload from Raul's shack, where I picked him back up to get his story finished (only one I couldn't do was Boone, as I think I've done all the triggers for him - besides, he's a pretty useless companion for a melee based stealth sniper character; he's always going off shooting people without my say so. I killed him).

It's a holdout weapon, my 100 Sneak character can take a Police Pistol, Chance's Knife, and a 9mm SMG in there.

For the freezing at Nelson... may just be a scratched game disc.
