I'm pretty sure we won't be cheated and that figure we see will be Graham, and he was, indeed, covered in pitch, set aflame and thrown into the Grand Canyon.
Without more specifics I don't see how we can claim it's impossible. Parts of the GC are a quarter-mile deep, with the river a mile away from the rim. But there are also areas that a tough enough fanatic could luck out and survive being covered in pitch, set aflame and thrown into.
Like the man above said, pitch burns slowly. If the flames were extinguished in time (or he'd chugged an Atomic Cocktail?) and his fall was broken somehow, it's possible. It's a fact he survived, so no sense complaining about it. The real question is, How?
Plus, Stimpacks and an hour's rest cure everything.
