Effectiveness of Abilene Kid and .22 Pistol SD

Post » Fri Jun 25, 2010 12:40 am

Hey! I started a new non-combat character who has some use of Guns, and focuses so far in Barter and Sneak. I managed to pick up the Abilene Kid LE BB Gun and it is pretty cool! For a BB-gun, it is Chuck Norris, but for a weapon, how does it compare? How good could it be against, say, a Vet Ranger? What are some things I should get to compliment it? Even though it takes 0 guns skill, should I raise it regardless?

Also, the .22 pistol confuses me, in game it says bonus critical damage and bonus critical chance, but never mentions reduced limb damage as the Vault says. Is it any good to be sneaking with, or is it just outright garbage?

Thanks in advance.

PS, I just realized how overpowered corpses are. OMG!!! SOMEBODY DIED! CHECK THE AREA! Damn....nobody's there. Whatever. OMG!!! SOMEBODY DIED! CHECK THE AREA! Damn....nobody's there. Whatever.OMG!!! If you're geared/set up for a high crit-chance, and are good at getting, critical hits, you can take out a deathclaw with it. It's the crit. damage that makes it a viable long-distance/ranged weapon. Obviously it's not going to be your close-range/shoot from the hip gun.

Yeah, I got 10 luck and I mostly roam in sneak, trying to get those crits. Sneak crits and critical hits are the same, are they?

No, they're different. Critical hits add the critical damage number to the base damage of the weapon (4+70=74) but sneak crits then double it. So total damage done for a sneak critical would be, say, (4+70)x2, assuming I'm reading the formulas right. It may have VATS variables or head-shot variables too or something. I find the details of such confusing, as always.

I always just assumed the BB guns were a joke weap, or something to save ammo with when you need to kill rats or mantises. But for kicks last night, I got the Abilene and snuck up behind a travelling group of traders and mercs, and took out all three of them in about 4 shots, from sneak. And those mercs had on +10 DT reinforced leather, too. Of course, my char has 100 guns and all the crit perks and traits, made for guns/sniping. Even still, it shocked the hell out of me that it is so powerful.... as long as they don't see you and dump you out of sneak mode... then it's worthless. Another upside, is that apparently it is considered to be a silenced weapon, so as long as your sneak is good and you stay hidden, you can keep on taking out multiple enemies with it.

I doubt it is going to be any kind of world-beater in your case though, unless you do buff up gun skill and get some crit-improvement perks and such.

I had to check this in the GECK. I'm not sure why the wiki says it does reduced limb damage. I see nothing in the GECK that indicates this, either on the ammo effects or the gun itself. It does have "x1" under the limb damage modifier box, but so do most (if not all) other guns so that's nothing special/unique. If it does have reduced limb damage it's either hidden from the GECK or in some other listing that I don't know the name of (thus can't find). As to whether it's worth using....it's essentially garbage. You'd be better off with the 9mm/Maria instead, imo. The .22 in NV's main advantage is the holdout weapon factor/silencer.

But for kicks last night, I got the Abilene and snuck up behind a travelling group of traders and mercs, and took out all three of them in about 4 shots,

:D
A DT of 10 doesn't help too much against 140+ dmg. Which is why Deathclaws can kill you in a few swipes even in your glorious power armor. Their damage is too astronomical.

Alright, good to know. I guess I will avoid the .22 pistol. I was hoping it would have been decent, but I can always just get a 10mm silenced.

The pre-patch .22 pistol did .8 dam against limbs. It was taken out and the crit dam was upped in the last patch. Sneak headshots with it will now do 9 + 18 = 27 * 2.75 = 67.5

Ah, that makes sense. I have no method installed to easily check different .esm versions. Another change to make something more appealing, I guess?
When you say "sneak headshots", are you using that because headshots usually don't have to deal with DT (that fudges up the math) or is there some kind of dmg. bonus to headshots?

It was my understanding that FNV instilled a new Headshot multiplier either when it was released, or with one of the first few patches. I could be wrong.

It is useful early in the game before getting a silencer for 10mm, after that it is useless. It has trouble killing people even with a sneak attack critical headshot, but it is silent :)

When I made my mod, headshots were doing an additional x.75 dam. I haven't checked to see if it was changed in the latest patch since I haven't updated my mod yet. I'll probs do that soon. If it's different, I'll let you know.
