A minor gripe-inaccessable map sections

Post » Fri Jun 25, 2010 6:55 pm

Why are there so many places within the borders of the map where a character can't walk? My character can be walking along just fine then stops dead as if there is an invisiable wall in front of him even though there seems to be nothing physical to impede his progress. I'm talking about places such as the little hill between the 188 Trading Post and the El Dorado substation and a little plateau just north of Coyote Mines, among others. The only way to keep going is to use the console to turn off collisions. What's the point in designing a landscape if a character can't walk across it?

There's nothing there. It's just there to exist in the horizon.

Try the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35011 to get rid of a lot of it, but it doesn't change everything. Make sure to put the esp at the top of your load order so other mods can write over it to avoid some reported issues. I agree the way the game implements restrictions on movement is often just badly done and breaks immersion.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. Even if there is nothing there at any of these locations, a character should be able to traverse the terrain. 90% of the map has nothing to see on it, but a character can still walk there, so why should these places be any different?

In fallout 3 you would be walking and get invisible walls, with things right in front of you...so annoying.

Also like the area between Quarry Junction and the Yangtze Memorial. The ground is almost completely flat there but try walking directly between the two locations. You get stopped in your tracks for no apparent reason.

The stated reason for the walls is to break up the terrain for the NPC AI; To simplify and manage 'pathing'.

Oddly... My main problem with them hasn't been the interior walls, but inadvertently straying outside of the exterior "invisible walls", and getting blocked from re-entry somewhere else; and not knowing where to return to.

The creators of Fallout are awesome talented, But I'm pretty sure even they cant create an unlimited game space! Would you prefer that there were massive grey walls surrounding the map making you feel totally hemmed in and trapped? The invisible walls give the illusion of places yet to explore, and avoid the player feeling claustraphobia or boredom.

Maybe you should go put some 2Unlimited on and run around the mountains of jacobstown for a while?
