I'm trying to add a follower but there saying i have one with me, there is no follower that follows me. how do i find the follower i supposedly have need some help any advice please?

your map should tell you who is following you....you can go to the bottom floor of vault 22 and your companion's will return...but your repair has to be high enough to fix the elevator. unless your are suffering from the ED-E glitch, then the only chance of dumping ED-D that i know of is to finish the Dead Money DLC. who was your first companion? and how many do you have total?
