Fallout 3 freezing during conversations with NPCs

Post » Sat Apr 02, 2011 5:59 am

Okay, so, I've just started playing Fallout 3 again after a long time. Went to nexus, downloaded lots of mods (mostly just textures and gameplay changes). Anyways, I've hit an issue that I never had before when I played the game a few years ago. Occasionally, and seemingly consistently, the controls will freeze completely during a conversation with an NPC. Mouse will stop responding and keyboard won't do anything. I've tried alt-tabbing out and back into the game, and all that does is get the game stuck in the esc menu (though the mouse cursor has repositioned itself in the game to where I have the cursor on my desktop when I go back). Does anyone know how to fix this?

Obviously, with some of the mods, I've got FOSE running. I've also used CFF Explorer to make Fallout 3 run with the ability to use more than 2gigs ram. I've also used FO3Edit to observe conflicts and fix those that need it.

I've also used the conflict detector and load order report function of FOMM to properly arrange the mods in the right loading order (for those that have that info in them, at least).

This is seriously game-breaking, and I have no idea what's causing it.

I've also edited the INI file with the BSA Manager to load all of the .bsa packages. I was getting red triangles and found out that would fix it.

Holy crap that's a lot of help. Thanks, man.

I followed the instructions about cleaning all the mod files, but I found the rest to be unnecessary for me.

Using the simple process of elimination (a pain in the ass to do with an issue that can take up to 5 minutes to show itself), I figured out it was the Galaxy News Radio mod that adds 100 new track slots. Though, that technically isn't true, either. It was the bloody music track files that went along with it. Apparently Fallout 3 hates .mp3 files.....I deleted all those and extracted the .wav files instead, problem solved.

Oi, modding can be a pain in the ass sometimes, no?
