I think Im playing this wrong

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 1:41 am

Hi,

I recently bought Fallout New Vegas as something to do before Skyrim hits the shelves and I must say that I wish this Bethesda made more games so I would never have to play a game by anyone else ever again.
Just that it took me a day to explore the starter area and get used to all the options shows how much content it holds.

But, coming mainly from elder scrolls games I have a slight problem.
There is a level cap of 30 and I feel I am gaining experience way too fast. I havent even done half the quests ( I think) and Im already level 25. Im going to run out of xp to get and perks to go for and levels to increase really soon and wont have done nearly all the game by then.
And Im thinking: What is the point to keep playing if nothing is gained?
Sure I can play for exploring and experiencing the wonderful quests and dialogue, and figuring out who of the factions I really want to support as it seems to be a best of evils kinda thing. All that I love. But I dont love that I wont get any better, cant improve my character, am just stuck.

I wish I played on pc so I could just mod out all xp from quests and halve xp from creatures and skill checks. That would about get it right, I think.

Am I just going about this game the wrong way?
How to improve my experience?

Two things:

A) All of the dlcs will raise the level cap by 5 each. You could time your dlc purchases to coincide with the currently approaching level cap. You'll be able to get to 50 with all dlcs.

2) I can't really help you with the other part. In depth role playing would help, since when you get that deep, how you role play your character means more and takes up more of you efforts than leveling up.

-gunny out.

its the kind of game you improve on the way you playeach playthrough.next time you know to pick yous perks wisely picking the ones that work with the way you play.fyi if you didnt already know theres a medical clinic behind crimson caravan that sells implants.they each put a point in your special skills so you dont need to waste your perks plus these one that gives your skin dt or something so your harder to hurt and a health regenerating one also.your not playing it wrong your just new plus the games yours to do with what you wish so not really a wrong way to play it.hope this helps

Hmmm the old level cap issue, you play for the story for the atmosphere, for the knowledge of what is going on in this creative rich envioment.
If you want a game just to level and find loot, NV is not for you, it has those elements plenty of them.
Just not the shear Skinnerism effect of clucking for food and recieving it as a reward , pushing buttons and getting food killing stuff and getting XP that some gamers think of as rpg's.

Oh, I am very much enjoying the atmosphere. The dialogue, the stories, the varying and rivaling factions.
I just ran into a ghoul that talked to me, I thought they were just monsters :) I feel this is like Oblivion should have been in character and story depth.
Im not really interested in loot either. For the moment I shoot with a 9mm and wear reinforced leather armour. Nice and easy.
I also dont care about uber quest rewards, but I sheer loved that after battling my way through radioactive patches and mutants I found a robot, repaired it and the.. female? drag queen? mutant called Tabitha went her peaceful way. Loved it.

No, what Im worried about that once I have no more character progression I will get bored. Thats what I like, the feeling my character is getting better, that the deathclaws that hurt me so bad are now easy. But now there are no more deathclaws, no more monsters I should avoid. Ive reached the peak.
Thats what I think my problem is.

I think I would enjoy the game more if levels came a whole lot slower.

Thank you for your tips, I will be sure to find the medical clinic :)
I guess what I dont like is that Im maxed out before Ive done even half the game. Wich is why I made the title, cause I think I might just be having the wrong mindset.
It sure is a great game and I am enjoying it very much.

Yes sorry I was obtuse with you, misunderstood and ignored portions of your post... I did just edit alot out of my first post because of that.
Sorry again.

Really the only thing I can suggest is to make little games up, the 9mm and light armour one is common.
Try taking on a deathclaw with a rolling pin.. my favourite encounter tbh.

Also all those different weapon types have perks unlocked based on how often you use them.
Just keep switching weapons and hunting, you'll get tons of new perks over time, and find lots of new weapons to try out.

Seeing how much I am into the story already with its odd 1950's future world gone bust and mankind struggling to survive on what is basically a new earth, I am sure I will :)
I hear many good things about fallout 3 and I would have bought that one if the second hand store had had it instead of New Vegas.
Next time :)

I tried a decent play through with just the kitchen knife in doc Mitchell's house. Stuff like that extends the life of these games big time.

Yes, you do gain levels too fast in unmodded game. Still avoiding too fast leveling is pretty easy with how few enemies there are everywhere.

Since i use mods to add more enemies i have also doubled the game setting that controls how much XP requirement increases every level up, and after 60h+ i'm at level 26. Might need to increase it a bit more as i don't want levels over 30. Hell, maybe i'll increase it a lot more and lower level cap to 20 :hehe:

I did the same thing as you did when I played FO:3 try to complete the game in one run.

I knew going into NV there was 4 different major paths so I intentionally left out parts of the game so I could have new experiences on my other runs.

I am on my fifth run having completed the game 4 times, and every game so far has been different. I will admit this is my DLC run so it doesn't really count.

I have still never touched the north eastern part of the map. I know whats there, and I plan on hitting it this run, but I would say quest wise I may... may be 65% complete with 5 runs, and 119 hours played.

Just remember you don't have to do all the quests on one run. There is a lot of fun to be had playing with different perks, and weapon types.

i never really felt leveling was too quick but thats just me and i do see what you mean.i love to play these kinda games very slow and ill get to lvl 30 at more like 150-200 hrs but not too sure coz i never really pay attention to that.i find just a bit of simple wandering from time to time slows it down a bit plus after more playthroughs than i could possibly keep count i still find stuff i never seen before.

Thats a really good thought, thank you :)
Playing like that will help each my characters feel unique. This girl likes the power rangers, oops, powder gangers, that guy favours mr. House.
Yeah, it would help to see each character as just getting a slice of the pie :)
