[WIP] Expanded Sotha Sil

Post » Tue Aug 24, 2010 11:43 am

Sotha Sil always sort of disappointed me. Instead of a big huge ever shifting clock city, it was a rather straightforward dungeon crawl with a few gears here and there.
And after playing Darknut's GDR, I thought "Why not do the same thing for Sotha Sil?"

And then I completely forgot about it.
Until now.

Expanded Sotha Sil (It's a working title people) aims to do justice to the Clockmaker's city. Instead of a underwhelming dungeon, it plans to turn into a vast ever-changing facility. Think Portal 2.
One of the main goals is to also to make the main focus of the city puzzles. Instead of fighting big robots, the player will have to use their brains to figure out their way through.
As of right now, this thread exists to help brainstorm ideas, both for potential puzzles, and for the mod itself.

So far, ideas include:
-Several run-ins with the magical/clockwork, gestalt intelligence that runs the city
-Portions in which the player is able to view the enormous vista of gears that spans across the city
-A scene in which the player will find the true location of the city
-A redone ending scene/fight

Sounds pretty cool. So is this going to completely replace the portion of the city that exists in game, or would those pieces be scattered around the expansion, or what? Puzzles seem very appropriate to the Clockwork City, but hopefully there will still be plenty of big robots to fight. *chuckle*

It's a complete replacement, much like Darknut did for Dagoth Ur.
And there will be battles. The Fabricants are still roaming around.

Hope you arent planning on using the default tilesets. They really dont have many features other than hallways, would get really boring after a while.

We are and we aren't. A little imagination can go a long way with the vanilla stuff

I have actually taken a serious interest in that and we may actually use that.

I'd love to see a 3-dimensional maze for this area though I guess that might seem out-of-place given the nature of typical Morrowind interior layouts.

A 3 Dimensional maze as in?

Expanded Sotha Sil (It's a working title people) aims to do justice to the Clockmaker's city.

Why not just call it Sotha Sil Expanded? That's what most, if not all the other town expansion mods are called. Plus, since that is the most popular name format, it's also the easiest for people to google and locate your mod. After all, you want people to find your mod and download it, right?
I've never seen this thread before so I'm thrilled that someone is working on it. Looking forward to some screenshots.

A maze that the player has to navigate consisting of rooms or passages that have vertical rooms or passages rather than only allowing movement along a horizontal plane. The chief difficulties would be constructing the thing in such a way as to make it both challenging and interesting to explore and coming up with a reason for it to exist. Well, I guess you could just make it out to be some kind of training area for Sotha Sil. Ideally, I think, I'd prefer an enormous cube-shaped cluster of rooms. Moving up or down might be done with stairs, lifts or even levitation.

Oh that? That's easily doable.

Do you believe that you could create a maze that is difficult to complete? I have not personally ever attempted to create a 3D maze. How about a "deactivated" maze similar to the machine-like thing in the Cube films?

Yeah, along the lines of a Cube maze.
We'll have to see though. Certainly anything that screws around with space and stuff will be included.
