Request for Obsidian

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:04 pm

There are some things here in Vegas that aren't accepted. Merely tolerated...
To start off Obsidian has a team of artistic workers who are good a coming up with interesting ideas especially with some of the armor and weapons that we've seen in New Vegas. NCR Ranger Combat Armor, the iconic armor of the game (good job with the added Desert Ranger Combat Armor with no faction tag btw), or the grenade machinegun which is tons of fun. Problem is, not everything was looked over properly.
What bugs me the most is the reinforced combat armors. Even for an older engine these armors aesthetically are below par, and even worse, they don't resemble the classic Fallout 1 & 2 combat armors that they are supposed too. Not very good for a game that is "the spiritual successor to Fallout 2." I know I'm whining a bit, but seriously, take a look at most other armors then swap on a suit of reinforced combat armor (mk I or mk II) and look at the detail put into each one.
There is definitely a portion of fans out there who don't like (or always like) to use power armor. Before Honest Hearts the best armor below power armor was the combat armor reinforced mk II, on par with the NCR Ranger Combat armor but with a lower weight. I don't usually play NCR aligned characters so the reinforced mk II was my preference for armor. Unfortunately it didn't look like it fit into the game world detail-wise. The bland "draw in" section on the back and shoulders, the lazy attempt at showing some wear-and-tear, and even the visor didn't gleam they way the visor on T-51b did. I'll tell ya, that visor looked like a black hole svcking in all light completely.
Obsidian has a crew working hard right now on patches and DLC for New Vegas. If any of them ever get the chance to read this pass it on to one of they guys (or gals) who would love a shot a redoing the reinforced combat armors (hopefully to be put out in a patch or DLC).
I know I'm one customer, but I'm one customer who will continue to play the game and buy the DLC's. Of course I'd be ecstatic to play though if I had a nice suit of actual combat armor to wear. All in all, I say this because, to me, the Fallout 1 & 2 combat armors were a bit more iconic that what it would seem and they deserve to be rightfully restored. Obsidian, don't you also think that it's your responsibility to your customers to make sure that your game, your work, your art! should be put out to it's fullest? Even if it's done by bits and pieces at a time.

Fellow fans, this was a long an daunting rant for just one issue, but it's an issue I personally wanted to at least address (I can at least say I took action even if nothing happens) but I know this isn't the only piece of work that didn't get it's just desserts. Things like the plasma defender look a bit dull, but if something like this in the game bugs you as well, feel free to reply and add to this thread about what you thought needs to be looked at.

Sincerely,
A Fallout Fan

Really...

They arent going to change it just because one person does. You let your fallout experience get diminished just because of Combat armor that doesn't look to your liking..
Oh yah and welcome to the forums

Sincerely,

Ace Hanlon.

I would hope they take care of stuff far more important than the look of reinforced combat armour. It looks like ghost recon advanced warfighter armour and that is.

If I had a dime for every "request for obsidian" "request for Bethesda" "Dear Bethesda" Or "Dear Obsidian" threads I'd be a millionaire.

If you don't like how something looks I suggest downloading a mod from http://www.newvegasnexus.com/. Or maybe better yet create your own mod using the G.E.C.K. if you think you have a better idea on how an armor should look.

In all fairness the RCA/RCA Mk II is ugly and poorly rigged- it's a pretty bad attempt to directly convert from FO1/2's low res 2d gear to 3d, and the changes in art style in the interim have made it really stick out of place, and the clipping/rigging issues have appeared because it obviously wasn't designed with them in mind for an isometric sprite-based game. Of course, Obsidian aren't going to go back and redo existing content, particularly not because some bloke on a forum asked them to, but the new armours they've put out have been much better quality- the Assassin Suit from Dead Money is really good. So hopefully there won't be any quite as ugly gear in the future DLCs.

there will always be something better they can do no matter what they did , if u buy a car then u will see another car and guess u're old car looks * ta ta - worst " then the new car , then u buy the new car , and circle repeats itself , obviously they can make a better engine , work twice as long , make even more details into the game , and then u would have a game costing double requiring the latest computer components then u would have to replace u're existing computer / xbox , then u would want to see every hair part of the head .... well i hope u understand what i'm telling u but i doubt u will

Why does everything have to be like Fallouts 1 and 2, not to mention that I like the art design with the Reinforced Combat Armors. If you want to blame Gamebryo you can but I think it's mainly the fact that there isn't a blue colored Combat armor that's the real problem but I could be wrong.

Personally, I thought the Combat Armor Mk ll looked cool OP :sadvaultboy:

I don't have any real issues with the armor personally, but since we're on the topic of armors, is the Combat Armor reskinned from Fallout 3? Because I could SWEAR the Combat Armor in Fallout 3 looks different from the one in Fallout: New Vegas, or is it just me?

The FNV combat armour uses some of the extra plates from the Winterized Combat Armour from Operation Anchorage, IIRC.

Oh? Well, I don't have a side by side comparison, but the way I feel when I see it is that the camoflauge is a little different and the coloring of the plates and the kevlar suit under it look alot darker.

That's just because both games generally have different lighting.
Also turns out they don't have any extra plates- I thought the CA in F3 had fewer leg plates. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/52/guesswhich.png/

I think the New Vegas Combat Armor just looks...richer

And unlike a lot of other people on here, I do agree with the OP's statement. However, patches usually aren't too concerned with textures, rather the function of the item. It would be part of a much larger patch, not a standalone issue.
And not everybody plays on the PC, ya dig?

Wall of text offends mine eyes.

Of course the armour is going to look a little different now than it did in Fallout2.. It's a matter of a few generations of technology.. you're just not used to seeing things looking so refined and smooth and not quite blocky and pixelated.

As techhnology improves, as consoles get better and better, armour will be smoother, weapons more realistic, briasts bigger..

I do believe these armors are a piece of [censored]. With all do respect to Obsidian. Even retextures don't change that, they are just bad. Before they add Combat Armor that looks like it should, I would prefer that they add Leather Armor from the first games in a DLC. And not screw it up.

The reinforced combat armours look awful, so on that much I agree with you OP.

Disagree about the Plasma Defender though.

And, on the PC... (wait for it...) they have mods for that! :hubbahubba:
