Stupid things you did on your 1st playthrough

Post » Fri Apr 01, 2011 10:51 pm

I told Dr. Zimmer that Harkness was the android he has looking for. I didn't know I would lose Karma.

I always tell him. I consider it a dying man's last wish, not that he knows he has less than a minute to live. I always talk to Harkness first and get permission to kill Zimmer. Then, I tell Zimmer that Harkness is the android, he thanks me and gives me the cybernetic implants, and I end his miserable life.

Getting Prototype Medic Power Armor at level 5 - props to you on that, even if you couldn't use it. I know how difficult that is, from personal experience. When I did it, I thought the manual would teach you how to wear Power Armor >.<

I think if you have 10 Strength your able to wear Power Armour without needing to get the training from the Citadel or O:A.

In reply to topic though, the stupidest thing I did was repair a Hunting Rifle with Ol' Painless. Also killing Uncle Leo thinking he was just a standard mutie.

Worst things (from which i learned)

1) In the southside is a area with a lot of cars in lines near a metro entry point. (a traffic jam prior to the bombs dropping with some Raiders as enemies)
One got a Rocket Launcher.

I was in the middle of the car-mass hiding behind one ..... last thing i saw was a rocket flying towards me and hitting a car next to me.
The chain reaction was ... nasty.

2) Drinking all Quantums/Sugar Bombs - ouch ...
3) trying to melee a super mutant (sledgehammer one) with a combat knife
4) going to far west and directly running into a Deathclaw with level 5, thinking i can beat it with my sawed-off shotgun and 12 shots
5) removing a teddy bear from a shopping cart ....
6) Discovered the Pipboy light about 8h into gaming

Thankfully, I played Fallout 3 after a long career in Morrowind/Oblivion. I came in with the mental preparation.
No, I'm not trying to sound all high and mighty. It's the truth.

Although, not a stupid thing, but my first encounter with a deathclaw.... Frightening. I'm still scared of them.

- Gave Ol' Painless to Charon (there's some sort of glitch where it can vanish from his inventory even if you get him to equip a better weapon)
- Collected every piece of worthless junk I came across to sell only to find out there's really nothing to buy once you have your house set up (still not exactly sure where my character carried 20,000 caps on his person)
- Opened fire on Dogmeat when I saw him from a distance
- Like most people I underestimated a deathclaw
- Ignored the warning about the first turret I hacked no longer having any targeting parameters

1. Sold all my stimpacks early on. I didn't know what they were :sadvaultboy:
2. Used the baseball bat as my primary weapon for like the first 4 hours, because I didn't know I had a 10mm pistol.
3. Hid behind a car when I encountered my very first super mutants. One had a missile launcher, and I neglected the sneak skill :nuke:
4. Couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get into rivet city
5. Gave my last stims to Dr. Li so I had to fight the Enclave with no stims with only a hunting rifle, and a few missiles. The missiles saved my ass.
It is still my favorite playthrough though

I could go on, but I won't

Nope, definitely have to have the perk.

Probably, but let me look at some 'stupid' things people have done.

Stimpaks? I played Starcraft. I know what they are, and I also know how to read. They clearly state +XX amount of health. That's a good thing.
Used the bat for a while? I knew I had a 10mm as soon as Amada gave it to me. Again, I posses the reading ability, which most people don't seem to have.
Killed Caravans? I can understand how other people would make this mistake. Ugly mutant cowthing... But I never opened fire on it.
Let Lucas Simms die? Sometimes I do that on purpose so I can get his clothing and house key.
Walking straight into paradise falls? I barely touch it on a normal playthrough. Went there once when I went Behemoth hunting for the achievement. Since I know how to play the game, I did fine.

Side note; I am a very defensive player anyway. I tend to survive through things other people wouldn't.

Using a chinese (or otherwise inferior) weapon? Never did, I look at the damage. Same thing on Oblivion.
Getting owned by bloatflies? Not sure how someone could get killed by one of those things. They're practically 1-shottable.
Couldn't find Megaton? How? There's a massive yellow sign with an arrow pointing towards it barely two steps out of the Vault. Miss that, you still have a map marker.
Taking bad perks? It's hard to fail with most of them, but again, I have a lot of RPG experience so I allocated stats efficiently.
Neglecting the Speech skill? Okay, I'll give you that one. It has a bigger role in FO3 than in any of the TES games. But there's an alternative for everything.
Taking a teddy bear out of a shopping cart? Didn't come across this particular trigger until I was purposefully hunting behemoths. Besides, I don't pick up everything I see.
Drinking all Quantams? I didn't know about the quest either, but I generally avoided anything with +radiation. Though it turns out it doesn't get debilitating until much later. As a general rule, I avoid any radiation whatsoever.
Hiding behind cars? I only had to see one explode to figure "Cars. Bad Cover. Got it." To be fair, I still get hit with some of its splash damage but give me some credit. Those explosions have a hell of a range.

Second side note: I don't blame anyone for falling under any of these. Learning curve and all that. Just simply defending my intelligence :)

Took the 30% xp perk? Hey, not a complete waste. Well, less of a waste when you get the 10 extra levels.
Ran out of bullets (due to not knowing vendors sold some)? Also not anyone's fault. It happens. Not to me, of course. My experience from Oblivion showed me that resting 3 days, shops restock. I would just sell loot, buy ammo to balance. Wait 3 days, rinse repeat. Hell, my common strategy is to explore and get at least a couple other 'cities' so I can fast travel and do the ammo-dance several times until I have no more loot to sell.
Tried talking to everyone including raiders and muties? The fact they shoot at me and scream insults kind of tells me they don't have a dialog option.
Kept drinking/eating, not knowing about Rads? Again, my effective READING ability comes into play when I see that big red +2 Rad /sec thing.
Getting lost in buildings? Not a 'stupid' mistake for people. Some of those things are hella hard to navigate.
Didn't know what skill books/bobbles were for? Again, experience from TES came into play. They also explicitly state "You gained +10 (+1 for books) in a skill". Again, I know how to read.
Sold the Lincoln's Repeater? Hell, I never even knew about it until I looked up unique (IE: Best) guns.
Stepping on traps? Fine, you got me. Still don't think that's a 'stupid' mistake for anyone. They're tricky to see, which is kind of the point. Mines however, I'm pretty good with.
Not knowing about the Fatman? At GNR, it gives you 8 mini nukes. 250caps (Around 150 with low barter) a pop? I wouldn't use it if I wanted too. That's way too much cash to pass up. I kill the behemoth with an assault rifle.
Using VATS for everything? Viable tactic, if a bit slow and tedious. I don't use it all the time myself.
Taking the Here and Now perk? Not a complete waste, but only if you leveled from killing a mob, so you don't lose any experience that way. Also effective with the 30% perk, so you could gain a level and a half.
Old Olney. hooooo boy, that's a big one. But never a 'stupid' move for anyone. But players quickly learn to fear that place.
Not knowing about the light on the pip-boy? You got me for a second time, it took me a while. But that's never made a very obvious control, either. I discovered it while being annoyed with the delay of my character bringing up the Pip-Boy menu, holding down the button and thought, "Who, light. What...?"
Anything involving killing an NPC that isn't generally an 'enemy'. Honestly, you're all idiots.
Not knowing about the Wait function? Again, TES player here.
Bloody Mess perk? Never bothered, it's a 'fun' perk more than anything.
Using up Ammo? Not a stupid thing. In my first playthrough, my 'learning' phase. I was very conservative. I also already mentioned I'm a very defensive player (big on thief/assassins in RPGs)

I got to page 5 and things started repeating. So, there you go.

Every action you all consider 'stupid' was mostly averted because I know how to read.

This thread isn't about insulting other players, it's about sharing dumb things you've done. If, as you laughably claim, you have never made a novice mistake, well then you really have no subject matter for this thread, now do ya?

I thought you could shoot only once in VATS.

I learned to shoot multiple times by watching a Youtube video.

But you confused Paradise Falls with Evergreen Mills? :meh: :lmao:

I didn't know about the PIPboy light for a loooong time - hours into the game, in fact.
I also took awhile to figure out how to get into Rivet City: finally, it dawned on me that there was an intercom just like the one on the Tenpenny Tower gate.
Yes, I let Lucas Sims die on my first playthrough. How the hell was I supposed to know he was going to be stupid enough to turn his back on somebody ruthless enough to want to blow up the town? :banghead:
I nearly shot Dogmeat the first time I saw him, but the green on the HUD stopped me; that and the fact that he didn't look like the Vicious Dogs / Raider's Guard Dogs that kept trying to eat me. Also, I had heard the name "Dogmeat" someplace and knew he was supposed to be an ally.

Got really confused when some guy at GNR said I had to get permission for power armor trading from Lyons who was 'in the lab.' I wasn't aware of the Citadel further along in the game and spent hours poking around GNR looking for a lab.

i did the exact same at GNR
