Why so much arguing over graphics?

Post » Mon Dec 06, 2010 3:39 am

console players seem to think it's petty for people to want good graphics, and it's just a way for them to snobby and nothing more. This is probably because they've never played a game with truly great graphics, so let me compare it to something you can relate to.
Who didn't enjoy the film Avatar? It's still the highest grossing film ever. Now, let us think why. The story wasn't anything spectacular: basically another scrap between humans and aliens. There are loads of those. It was such a success because it made you feel as if you were actually there, thanks to a combination of 3D and great graphics, and this really does make it more enjoyable. Games are exactly the same. In fact they should be even more so since you actually play as the main character. So why shouldn't we want to have better graphics so we can enjoy the game more?

Tora, don't you dare say something correct, that's being a pc elitist. Consoles for teh winz0rs lululololul!

Seriously, yes, better graphics do help immersion immensley, and if a xbox 720 came out tomorrow console players would pounce right on it saying 'zomg awesum gfx11!!1!!11'. Most console fanboy's put on reality blinkers when they hear about how pc's are very powerful and cheap (not to mention epic steam sales), makes them get a bit of buyers remorse you see.

1 : Story and Character development.
2 : Gameplay and Multiplayer.
3 : Graphics.

Crysis 2 for me, it's not the game with best awesome graphics, it's just the best awesome game !
This. Nothing but this. I won't waste a penny on a game with a shi*ty story same here

I'd rather test it myself and see the graphics to make me believe. But good point guys :)

As far as graphics go I'm convinced that tasteful art direction and clever approaches to shadows and lighting will make a game stunning on any platform. I couldn't care less about low res textures, I can even tolerate the general low resolution of console games even though my current PC runs Crysis 1 like a champion. Look at Mirror's Edge, that game had low res textures but the beatuiful use of color, the pre-baked global illumination and nice feel of tempo made it an incredible experience far superceeding any other Unreal Engine 3 to-date in my opinion. DICE know how to handle graphics in general, their visual direction just works out.

More importantly though I'd like to see this console cycle end in innovative physics solutions like these old shots from a CE3 presentation. An explosion ensues:

And look what happenes with the smoke trails:

Not even Warhead on PC had this.

Unfortunately I haven't spotted this feature in Crysis 2 footage so far. But even if it doesn't find its way into the game I'm still impressed with stuff like this and think it is the smartest approach to the never-upgrading hardware. Find better ways to make your games believable by adding features the player has never seen anywhere else instead of trying to one-up everyone in the practise of standard features.

For me:
1) Gameplay (ie: Cover System, Customizable Weapons and Avatar, free of bugs/glitches and such);
2) Multiplayer;
3) Graphics;
4) Story and Character Development;
5) Music and Sound Effects

Mirrors Edge had some of the nicest, sharpest textures i've seen in a game:

But i agree that the lighting/colours that made it really stand out. Great post though. It really does make a huge difference, the subtle additions/changes, to the overall picture :)

Graphics were an important aspect of Crysis but not the defining one. The huge scope of the world, the physics engine and great narrative made it probably the finest game ever made. I have just got through re-playing Crysis and it still impresses the hell outta me almost four years after release.

PC users remember Yerli saying that Crysis couldn't be done on the consoles so you have to understand we were very worried when we heard Crysis 2 was gonna be cross platform. Even if Crysis 2 turns out to be awesome the PC crowd will still know that it could have been better.

I just hope that the Crytek team have spent some time enhancing the experience for the people who made Crysis successful. At the end of the day I'm sure the designers want to make the game as good an experience as can be had in a game and are as frustrated by limitations as anyone else.

Sure, those look great. I was talking about the 360 version of the game. The indoor textures had nice normal or bump maps or something on them, looked very good on either system but outdoor textures on 360 were only OK imo. It's covered up nicely by the unicolor character most surfaces have, it's always shades of grey or strong vibrant colors.

as far as graphics go, i just want them to look nice, that can mean realistic, unrealistic, what have you, they should just look convincing. i see how pc gamers get fed up whan they see crysis trying to appeal to new console gamers instead of the original fanbase. but i garentee you, gamplaywise, storywise, and graphicwise, crysis 2 will be betyter than its predecessor, for ALL gamers.
