Armor differences from oblivion to skyrim

Post » Thu Jan 06, 2011 1:35 pm

As we all know, skyrim is set 200 years after oblivion. So there's gotta be some differences in armor design. What do you think the differences.

I just hope there are more general armor types in the game.

The long lost technology of pauldrons shall be recovered. With the invention of tape-measures, blacksmiths will once again be able to make armor loose (yet form-fitting) enough to allow clothing to fit beneath it.

I really hope so :)

There will probably be more armor types this time around in Skyrim. I think the armor that was available to us in Oblivion was decent, but they all kinda lacked diversity and really werent many types of armor to choose from.

Time has nothing to do with it. Technology's not a straight line and 200 years does not automatically translate into nanomachines and jetpacks. Armor variety is a virtue of design, and it certainly looks like there will be a greater variety this time around.

While I certainly want more armors and apparel in general, I'm more concerned with how it behaves. Fallout 3 and Oblivion's Damage Resistance was lazily designed and poorly implemented. While I'd prefer New Vegas's Damage Threshold system, I don't think that would be very sensible in a piecemeal armor system that The Elder Scrolls have always had. Morrowind's AR system is a happy middle-ground. The simple-yet-effective damage formula of (Damage*Damage)/(Damage+AR) gave weight to high-quality weapons and apparel, while not totally making low-tier stuff worthless or nonthreatening. The only thing to really adjust is the Armor Scores and durability of the individual pieces, in order to alleviate some of that "Heavy Armor damage sink" at higher qualities. If only the Armor Rating didn't skyrocket with increased skill, Morrowind's system would have been nearly perfect.

200 years doesnt mean the armor design or basic structures will change. It wasnt like that in real life either, until the mass production of firearms.

Had a feeling this was another of those firearms thread, but perhaps with spacesuits or whatnot....

Anyway, not any real differences at all because of time.
All I hope for is more designs in general and more unique ones as well. I'd prefer them to look more like Morrowind's armours than Oblivion's. I prefer Morrowind's... looked better and cooler :)
