Community Forum Moderators?

Post » Wed Dec 01, 2010 10:36 pm

Ok first off, yes I am aware of this...http://www.gamesas.com/about/careers.php
That is NOT what I am refering to.
Im talking about non-gamesas employees.
Err let me explain.
I play EVE Online.
The forum moderators are actual players (they aren't allowed to say who they are though. ) that CCP (Creator of EVE) recruited to be moderators on the forums.

I am just curious to the possibility of gamesas recruiting members of the forums to be moderators on the forums at some point. I am interested in the thought of this.

~Vac.

(I DIDNT search the forums for an answer, they are new, havent seen anything yet so meh)

(Following is a quote of what the ISD Program in EVE is (What i was speaking about above) to make it very clear what I am talking about)
Due to the very social nature of Eve, volunteers play an important role in the day-to-day activities of the game. There are several branches of the program: player support, forum moderators, bug hunters and event staff (read more about them here). Training is provided, so no previous experience is necessary, just a basic knowledge of the Eve universe and a desire to contribute to the betterment of the community.

The program is run in accordance with The Terms of Playing for EVE Online ISD Guide Program, which participants are requested to sign. CCP is now inviting EVE enthusiasts to sign up for the ISD Program. If you want to take part in this adventure, please send in your application. Please answer the questions to the best of your ability. Your replies will help us get to know you better and give us greater insight into what capabilities you possess. Applicants who pass to the next phase of the application process will receive an e-mail giving them instructions on how to arrange for a personal interview with a volunteer coordinator. Due to the volume of applications we receive, only those who have passed to the next phase will be contacted.

For now the forum is pretty small so it doesn't require much moderation yet. I'm pretty sure gamesas will recruit community moderators when a need for it arises. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

Yeh i understand that as it is, the community is small.
Was just curious and fishing for an official statement of whether or not they would be looking to recruit forum mods from the community as time goes on and the community grows. Image

Meh not really, just curious actually.
I cannot say if I am or am not a member of CCP's ISD team (Ahem...sorry, no choice).
Just thought itd be a cool idea to see volunteer forum mods here too.
So again, curiosity more than anything at this point. Image

I'm sure they'll hire moderators and community managers when they need to do so. It's really too early for that right now. An original gamesas fan, also known as Sol Invictus and Exitium. Currently running Hellforge, an original Diablo III community.

Yea, don't see much point until there is much larger community, and they prove to the world they are truly back.

What a silly sentence, if you weren't under an NDA, you'd be able to say you weren't. So ;) or not , you're either admitting it , or a poser.

Damn I'd love to be one of the web developers, all the way over in the UK though so its gonna be an impossibility. :(

But the idea of the forum mods etc.. its a good idea to keep in mind for now until the forums get larger.

@Pipboy - ever been a forum mod?
Back in the old days I was a forum moderator for a small internet community (~1500 users) gathered around snuff (nasal tobacco) and I must say that after 2 years I was so tired of sending messages to people who wrote something wrong, or in a wrong place, or wrote stupid posts, or did not bother to uise "search" option, or went on a offtopic rampage.. ant then I had to edit or delete each and every post like that...

It looks nice and representative but in a wide perspective and large forums - it simply svcks. However, it is a job that needs to be done... if you really want to help you should consider that forum moderator has almost no social life, he has major sleep and vitamine C debts, and probably is addicted to coffee ;P Image

Hah, I know what you mean, it seems like because of some users we will have to have moderators very soon.

Just joined the forums, you only have 32 posts(new forums duh) and your already looking to be a Mod? i been a community manager for a while in alot of different sites, UWWWB, Black Security and gamereply.org, and the Moderator position for such large forums was either a actual job known as a Community Manager, or a position given to someone thats been the forums since its inceptionand been actively engaged in it since then. Its most likely that Moderators will not be a voluntary position at this time.

I doubt Moderators will pop up at this very time anyway. The forum has only just been created, and so far there have been no calls for users to be banned or for topics to be locked.

If that situation ever arises in the future, and in far greater numbers than the admin can handle, they may start asking for Moderators.

Wow people jump to such amazing assumptions soooo quickly.
Hey folks guess what...
I don't care about being a forum moderator.
I can see why yall might have gotten that opinion...but...

Because of my experiences in EVE Online, I have seen the benifit of community recruited forum moderators.
This is versus forum moderators from inside the company.
Basically I have seen that with community forum moderators, the developers get drawn into posting much more with the customers because those forum moderators understand the player needs and are able to draw the attention of the devs to the issues of importance.

Thats why I was asking.
I see having or not having community recruited forum moderators to be a very big factor, or looking glass, into how well developed a company's community oriented communication and information dissemination techniques and practices are. (Oh and that wonderful jumble of words..I have a Bachleors in Communication so sorry about the technical mumbo jumbo.)

So it was a simple inquiry, that was all. Maybe i should have been a bit more clear on my purposes, but mea culpa (my mistake...its latin), but oh well. Image

Yep, well ive been an administrator for a few forums too, but since you've put it that way i think i better focus on my studies more than this.

I'll just stick to setting them up and doing my Relational Databases :(

Don't get me wrong, if you have other moderators to work with - it's not that hard, but it takes 1 guy with ilness and 1 on vacation with his/her family or partner and everything falls on you, you are responsible for every single post, thread, sending warnings, etc. This is exhausting.

Moderation is a team effort to keep forum clean, and as long as there is a team, it can be done withouth any unnecessary sacrifice. Image

I understand your reasoning for asking.. it's cool helping out and being part of the community in a significant way. Also however those who scold you for seeking "epower" so soon have a valid point. There are a lot of "ePeen" dudes out there just searching for a way to gain teh powah and authoriteh.

What would really be a sweet deal would be volunteer support staff. I've already imagined sending in a help request to a GM and having a Brotherhood of Steel scribe responding :P OR, volunteering to help out in that manner! It'd be wicked, hehe. Oh, and I do understand what I've written as I've worked as a volunteer gm for two major MMORPG's and also served as a volunteer moderator.

For now though its so insanely early its a waste of time to ask, when they don't even have a forum dedicated to the game created and wont until at least they have a real name for the game :P
