Turn Based MMO Possible?

Post » Thu Dec 02, 2010 2:51 am

Hey all,

I recently came across an ad, I think at gamespot.com, for a free MMO called Atlantica Online. I've only played for about an hour and it is very basic compared to the big MMO's. The intriguing part for me is that it combines an MMO with turn based strategy. I don't know if anyone here has played or heard of it, but its a concept worth checking out and discussing in this thread. If anything, it kills some time as we wait for V13 announcements and allows us to check out the competition!

Cheers!

There are a few turn-based MMOs out there. It's quite possible. You might also look into Wizard 101, for example, as a way of basically having turn-based non-tactical combat (they use Magic/Pokemon-like cards).

Thanks for the reply Chris, I'll have to give Wizard 101 a trial run. I can't tell by Wizards 101's movies exactly how the game works, so i'm curious. I didn't realize there were so many MMOs (available in English), much less turn-based MMOs available for free or small fees online. I'll have to do some more Google searching! Thanks again!

I think an MMO could work with fallout / jagged alliance style combat if combat was instanced. Basically you could have a persistent character and world, and combat would be resolved in an instanced tactical map. I think you would need plenty of fun things to do in real time as well to keep people interested though. Perhaps a hybrid RT / TB combat system like fallout tactics had, combat in some areas being a real time free for all and in other areas a turn-based tactical instance. That would allow for someone without out much time to run around and kill things in real time and still have fun, and then those looking for something more tactical could team up and do instanced team-based assaults and defenses etc.

I hadnt thought about this before, I just assumed V13 would be real time. The more I think about it the more I like the idea. Having the game in real time and then it shifting to turn based for combat. However, I dont think that V13 should be like that. I dont think wider gaming audiences would enjoy that. Sure, all of us hardcoe FO fans might well love it, but gamesas wont make any money catering just to us. So I think the game should be fully real time.

Good point. Just to clarify, we haven't released any details about V13, so this is a discussion about other MMOs.

I think most people get it, but there is always one or two out there...

I've had things that I've said taken the wrong way too many times (which leads me to believe that the problem is actually _me_, but that's a conversation for another day.)

I realy dont want a turn based like these (anime games/mmo are) i dont want instyanced turn based like final fantasy !!X.If fallout can have a turn based thing it will need to be like in fallout 3 maybe or fallout tactics with the frozen of all who are in combat and maybe other that can see the fight but cant interfere.Instanced turnbased will ruin the game and is not a good idea Image

I am the Formless in all forms.Strenght si the only measure ,all things can be resolved with violence and blood share.

I think we are only talking hypotheticals here, V13 likely won't be turn based, we're just trying to hash out how it would work in an mmo.

how would people being able to see combat but not interfere be better than an instanced battle? Seems like your suggestion would be cumbersome and very awkward. And for the record FO3 was no closer to turn based than Max Payne, and you can't pause the world in an MMO.

I like the idea of having a Fallout 1 style MMO, where the world is in real time, but combat is turn based (not instanced). Say a real player and mob is nearby (or player vs player) and combat is initiated, a "zone" would be created around the two fighters. Add a timer, similar to the Altantica game, to force the player to make decisions quickly (add bonus dmg for a faster attack?). Animations can be made so players outside the battle zone would see battles that resemble real time but are in fact turn based. If they walk in to the zone or fire in to the zone, they enter combat and create an even bigger zone of combat.

Here's how I would distinguish real time from combat (apart from the marked "zones"): you can have the 1st person perspective while running around and doing whatever and have the camera seamlessly pan above to give the classic Fallout angle during combat. Of course, you can rotate it how you like or even stay in 1st person perspective if you like.

If the fights in a city, smaller zones can be created so every fight that takes place doesn't slow down the community, but an all out brawl could be possible. Like fallout, people who are neutral will have a distinguishing mark or outline or whatever.

Like Chris said, this is not to say that V13 has released any details suggesting this, but I think it would be a MMO worth thinking about, even if its not V13.

yes i make a previous post somewere but i cant remmebr were with this matter.A inteligent trun based system in fallout mmo like you say (who interfere come in fight and of course not instanced ) can work very well.Of course with optioni to chose the fight in turn based if your gaming tipe is more of a tactique and to chose normal for fast peaced.

PS: i remember in fallout tactics ,some fights requierd trun based for acurate hits and low amunition spend and some need huge firepower but with alot of amo cost. Image

Please don't make Fallout MMO turn based - I really like the Dungeons and Dragons Online interface where I felt I had more control over my destiny? However, I know some that like the Lord of the Rings Online UI better.

Both games are real time.

i have been playing atlantica since CB2 and its not really that "basic" .... but "meh" I'm a fanboy so my word dossent count.

as for turn based: its possible in many ways, but most of them are kinda "old school" and would look low tech by todays standards. hay, "OC" ..... i got something for ya right here! _|_ (^.^) _|_

"MMO-RPG" = "Mass Market Oriented - Repetitive Profit Genera"

I know the Fallout fan base would be back for the MMO, however you need more than just cult followers. I feel gamesas would make a big mistake making it turn based.
