Where do you go for gaming news?

Post » Wed Mar 18, 2009 3:00 am

What websites do you go to for gaming news?

Multiple times a day: Bluesnews, Kotaku, Massively, and BoardGameGeek.
Maybe once a week: Joystiq, Gamasutra, Tentonhammer, Gamepolitics (daily if something interesting is going on), Gamesindustry.biz

My reading habits have gotten a little stale and I'm looking for some fresh air. What sites do you suggest?

For anything steam related I go to steamfriends.

Anything else I usually pick up from misc sites like digg and forums. :) Image

www.escapistmagazine.com usually has some intelligent discussion going on. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

HERE'S an interesting quick story about Crytek. Starting to look a bit ambitious. Wonder how long it will be before MS tries to "Aquisition" them.

I try to stay away from as much gaming news as I can, otherwise I'll be tempted to spend money >_<

I get nintendo news updates to my email. Like today was the first I've heard about the new DSi :p I haven't seen a DS game advertised in the last couple of years that's piqued my interest though...:/ -Formerly FalloutChris. But apparently was confused with Chris Taylor :p

Hmm, well, I generally stay away from the mainstream sites... they tend to be ad heavy and rehash information. Not to mention the poor journalism (a.k.a. pr work). Message boards can be full of nonsense... oh... wait. But it depends. I only hear about things when there is a big update, then almost all the sources get it. Anything beyond that is usually rumor, speculation, or just uninteresting.

And yeah, Zero Punctuation is pretty great... except that opening music. It's pretty wretched. I liked his old opens better.

Well, Zero Punctuation is more comedy than serious reviewing, but Yatzee does tend to make many points I find myself agreeing with.

I would also advise staying away from mainstream sites, such as IGN and Gamespot. Their reviewing is usually awful and off-the-mark anyway. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

Not to mention its usually more of the same between such sites.

G4TV is usually good (for info, not reviews) if your willing to put up with 75% of the content dealing with Olivia Munn's boobs (its the internet, plenty to find else where eh). Image

For general news: Kotaku, RockPaperShotgun and Shacknews, also Joystiq once in a while
Indie gaming news: TIGSource and http://www.indiegames.com/blog/
also http://www.roguetemple.com/ for Roguelike game news.

Haha, you don't find most mainstream reviews to be comedy? They're generalizations (as this ironically is), and almost always horribly similar in the way the glorify a game instead of actually looking at it objectively.

They are now-a-days extensions of marketing... point blank.

Yeah, the difference is the reviews take themselves seriously and Yatzee doesn't, and even though he doesn't he's usually more accurate. Plus he makes you laugh in amusemant instead of disbelief. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
