Favorite Games in the last few years

Post » Fri Apr 03, 2009 2:30 am

That means RECENTLY so no Black Isle, no Troika, ect ect. The choices can be from any recent platform, PC/Wii/360/PS3/PS2 so try and keep the games to the last 2-3 years.

Some of my favorite releases:
Bioshock (Not as deep as system shock by any means, but the setting was great and well delivered)
Madworld (Man this game is a HOOT specially with a couple friends around to go 'WTF DID YOU JUST?!...')
Team Fortress 2 (Some of the best character design in a looong time, and its in a MP FPS!)
Super Mario Galaxy (Level design was pretty amazing on some of the worlds)
Mass Effect (I wasn't a HUGE fan of the story or characters, but the universe they created was deep and flavorful)
Smash Brothers Brawl (Great party fun, wish the online was better though)
World of Goo (Amazing game, if you haven't played it yet go check it out!)
Portal (Of course we all loved this game)

I'm sure many of you have noticed a distinct lack of RPGs, especially cRPGs on that list... wellllll I find that there simply hasn't been that many amazing RPGs in the last few years. There has been a few good ones but nothing that made me go 'wow...', and as for cRPGs well there has been a HUGE drought of cRPGs in the last few years with only a few out there, and many of them buggy and boring IMO..

What about you folks? What are you into these days?

**edit** forgot to mention: Anything by Tell Tale games is amazingly fun, not always long or particularly deep, but ALWAYS fun.

I haven't played much that I've enjoyed for the past couple years.

Portal was fantastic. Beyond that hmm....

Puzzle Quest? Had fun with it, just got the sequel. Unfortunately it looks as though with the sequel the designers totally misunderstood why the original was such a success and pretty much gutted every feature I liked.

The Wii version of RE4 was good enough to play through twice in a row.

Haven't sunk much time into it, but I do really like Super Mario Galaxy.

As far as RPGs go? Yeh it's been pretty dismal. I really want to like The Witcher but just can't play it past a certain point for some reason. Though you've got to give credit to the first RPG to invoke the line, "your mother svcks dwarf cock"

Braid just showed up on steam, I've heard nothing but good things about that, may d/l it today.

But yep, other than that I'm still rockin the black isle and troika stuff when I need a game to play. Maybe a little Jagged Alliance 2 or Xcom on superhuman when I feel like getting my ass kicked.

Dungeons and Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online.

Beta tested both. And have been playing LOTRO since closed beta two years or so ago.

Before that, it was Never Winter Nights persistent worlds such CPAP and a couple others.

Call of Duty 4 and then Cod World at War for me. If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Keeping games to the past 2 to 3 years is tough especially for the Playstation 2 haha. My room mate has a Playstation 3 yet other than FO3 he just has demos of other games. I still retain the Playstation 2 and trying to kick my self in the ass to finish Shadow Hearts so I can finish the series. Its an unbelievable RPG by the way. Portal was fun and disturbing at the same time :D Image
I told the Overseer of Vault 13 I'd give everything to save everyone, and so I did, I saved them all. Since then I've felt loneliness.

I have discovered the wonders of Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty (notably 4) and am loving Killzone 2 at the moment.

Then there's Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4 - the best MGS games in my opinion.

Pretty much any Valve game.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl also finds a place in my list :)

Oh, and the PSP Monster Hunter games, and I am looking forward to the release of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite in July (in Europe). War... War Never Changes...

I have decided to break the rule and say...

Hellbender and all of the Descents. If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Actually I am playing GTA: San Andreas and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri these days and loving them both.

Regarding games that have surprised me in a positive way the last years I have to mention:

Portal (I laughed and laughed and laughed - such a well designed and funny game)
Mass Effect - for the whole Science Fiction vibe, NOT for the broken dialogue system. (Yes; well written storywise, but "fake" as in no consequences and a manual telling the player which answers were "good" or "bad".)
WoW - Stopped playing in 2007, but had lots of fun during the 2,5 years I played.
AoC - not playing at the moment, but loved it and still do. (Just don't have time for it these days.)

As I don't have a high end gaming rig I tend to play games a couple of years after everyone else, so I am probably a bit dated ... ---------------------

Frankly, I haven't enjoyed anything that's come out since 2005. I'm usually a PC-exclusive gamer, but now I'm catching up on old PS2 games I've been able to buy at dirt-cheap prices. I had a permanent constipated grimace on my face, I was revenge personified

well most recently for me its been borderlands, its just fun and creative
beat hazard, XBLA game easily the best purchase i made from the arcade, top down shooter that generates levels based on your own music thus creating infinite levels
batman: arkham asylum, if you don't know about this one then just go get it, best batman game ever
battlefield bad company, since it was the first fps I played in a long time that had both a great multiplayer and one of the best single player modes as well since it knew it had a b-move story and had fun with it
lost odyssey, its the first rpg I've played in almost a decade that truly challenged me as a gamer, and made me actually feel for the characters even so much as shedding some tears, also probably the saddest game I've ever played, but in a good way makes you really feel for the main character
pretty much every bioware rpg made in recent years most notably mass effect and knights of the old republic,if you haven't played and finished these two games then you have cheated yourself of 2 of most awesome endings I've seen lately
and going further back conkers live and reloaded since its, well its conkers if you know what I am talking about that should be enough, and silent hill 2, since its the last game that really and truly scared the hell out of me
