We want Descent on Xbox 360 and PS3

Post » Fri Apr 03, 2009 1:27 pm

Come on everyone! Its time to get the word out and let the folks at gamesas know how you feel. Most of us would love nothing more than an online Descent game of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The online game is still one of my personal favorites after all these years. So how do you feel about it? Let gamesas know what kind of gaming you want! I WANT DESCENT ON PS3 PLEASE

hehe.. "Most of us" are still playing Descent on the PC. ;)

Although, you can be sure that any further continuance of the franchise will include a console version for sure. That's just good business sense in today's gaming market.

I decline. The controlers were not made to play in a fast, full 3D, 360 degree, and 6 degrees of freedom gaming style. I tried to play with the 360 controller on my PC and I was getting my ass kicked by someone that I can beat.

But yes, people will buy the game for the consoles, but they are most likely not going to like it, especially when they go online and see how fast PC users can fly.

EDIT: I can see Descent being played on the 360 efficiently only if people buy the full flight control system, but Microsoft slapped their 360 logo on it and bumped up the price by 10000000%. If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

sorry to say but the whole v for vendetta approach wont exactly work in this kind of situation. it all comes down to functionality and i would say the whole descent experience. i dont think it would be too easy to be immersed in the game when the controls are on a gamepad. it wouldnt have the feel a joystick or a mouse provides. The real question, then, is why the hell doesn't Microsoft allow keyboards and mice on the 360? The thing is basically a Windows computer right? I know many many people who would rather use PC controls than a gamepad even for most of the games that are out now.

In any case there is already a thread for this on which the controls question has been discussed at length. Incidentally, I can't remember a single person on that thread (including myself) who said that Descent shouldn't come out for consoles so long as was developed first for the PC. I'll get it for my computer but other people won't, and I'm all for spreading the game as widely as possible so definitely go to the consoles too.

I'd like to see an offical release of the original Descent 1 and 2 on the DS, the touch screen and stylus act similar to a mouse.

That's simple: Microsoft will lose money. If they can sell you a controller or you can plug a keyboard into the 360, and I bet most people who have a 360 have a PC, which are you going to choose? It's true that Microsoft has a line of keyboards, before anyone says it, but the controllers are usually more expensive, and I presume, that Microsoft can get a larger profit off them.

PC first, consoles second, even if only so we don't get 'dumbing down' occurring. Besides, Descent on a controller is a nightmare... A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

Actually it is way more profitable to create console games than to create PC games: The console hardware is clearly defined, no surprises, no gazillion of configs and a wide performance range, and software piracy still is way way below what it is for PC software.

The ugly side of this is that many game developers primarily build their games for consoles and their limited controllers and storage devices, and usually the PC ports of these games suffer from that in exactly the areas of controller and savegame handling; something I have come to hate from bad experience.

Finally, Descent needs so many controls that imo it is not really suited for a gamepad (I have a PC gamepad, and D2X-XL supports it, and I find no way to control the ship with the gamepad as good as with a mouse or joystick and keyboard combo).

So I hope Descent 4 - should it ever become a reality - will at least get a solid PC port (probably with extended controller and i/o handling capabilities built right into it), or be a PC first game; but I am afraid it will not turn out that way (unless some rich guy wastes a few million on it for the heck of it w/o caring of any profits). why doesn't microsoft reajust the keyboard? they can have ppl come to them ang get the XBox/Wii compatible keyboard. "When you learn to control your emotions and tame them, no matter what situation you're in, you will then truly become king."-Sonny, speaking to a young boy

I've seen a video where the Descent trilogy was played with the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncyJ7hi5_wI. It looks difficult... All we need is sisu, sauna and salmiakki... Hyv? Suomi!!

Because they will then sell it as "Official Merchandise", which would cost a lot more than it usually would. That would probably lead to most people not buying it.

As somebody has mentioned either earlier on this thread or on another one, there is a 360 joystick. There is also something going around that allows a keyboard and mouse to be plugged in and used as a controller, but I'm currently aware that Microsoft considers that against some policy somewhere. Also, it costs too much for me to bother with, and I've become accustomed to the 360 controller. A massive thank you to EA for:

All I gotta say here, is: Its annoying playing games that can't interface cross platform.... Such as Team Fortress 2 360/PS3 > PC , I would like to play my friends that have the same game but the server system is different so it isn't a possibility. So Having Descent4 be crossplatform and also multiplayer cross platform would also be nice.... However I understand the problems playing the 6Dof with either 360 or PS3 controller because I've tried both and commands are very limited, you can fully trichord shoot and AB at the same time, but you loose either choording or panning if you try to switch weapons or flare which would get you killed on pc.... so it would be a bit unfair, unless duel joystick was implimented for 360 or PS3.

MS isn't making money off the 360's. In fact, they are losing quite a bit on each system. ...this is why you pay for new content for some games and other stuff on the Live Store.

There's no official release, but DScent is probably what you're looking for. It's homebrew, though, so if you don't have a flash card you're sol. It's pretty much impossible to move in 3 directions, though, as you're limited to one hand for aiming and one hand for firing, moving, and weapon selection. Still fun as long as you're only fighting easy AI.
