Stick to underground dark tunnels, please don't try to copy FPS'es. Do something Different.
Make BOT very important, something like the dog in Fable II.
My story to Descent 4.
Descent: Goldmine
A small mining company named ProMine has 6 one man-mining ships that harvest gold in a underground location on planet Eisa. You arrive at Eisa and are greeted by Angela Summers, a female mechanic, who was already waiting in the lobby leading to the elevators. Angela walks towards you and welcomes you to Eisa. She introduces herself and asks you to follow her down. Not much to see on the surface.
You step into the elevator that goes down and Angela tells you about the company you will start working for. ProMine had a rough couple of years so a lot of pilots and mechanics got fired. Since they found a new dig site, deep within the planet’s core, things are looking up again. They can’t seem to get in contact with the old pilots though, that’s why they are hiring. She gets a phone call from Eric, one of the remaining pilots, who tells her his ship has broken down and he’s stuck at the 3rd level. Angela excuses herself, hangs up and calls Jack, the maintenance guy, to pick up Jack and tow the ship back to the garage. While descending further into the mountain you cross a test laboratory level that shows you what the company does; pure old-fashioned gold mining. Angela tells about the process of retrieving the gold from the rocks while traveling downwards to the lower level.
As the elevator reaches the lower level, Angela asks you to come along and check up on the damaged mining ship. The elevator doors open and you walk through the small, deserted quarters and follow Angela to the garage. The environment looks white and clean. Some pictures of forests and oases are painted on the walls to remind the employees of earth. You see water stations, lockers and sleeping quarters. You walk past a leisure room where the tv is still on, playing an episode of a popular earth soap. Nobody is there though. Entering the dark lit garage you find Eric and Jack, examining the mining ship hanging from the ceiling. While Eric exits the cockpit, Jack says it’s missing the expensive drill head. Eric slams his hand against the metal hull and tells he must have lost it when it got stuck in a stone. Jack sighs and starts mumbling about getting into his vehicle and retrieving the drill. Then Angela points out this would be a great opportunity to get you into the mining ship for the first time. Eric and Angela will program BOT to guide you to the dig spot Eric was mining before his ship broke down; you will pick up the drill and return with it to the base.
Angela explains that BOT is a small flying guiding robot that has the total underground area baked inside his memory chip. It also has a gold detector built in to point out places to dig. You follow Angela back through the quarters towards the hanger where 5 mining ships are collecting dust in their chargers, sunken in the ground. Only the cockpit is visible above the floor. All of the ships are pointed outwards of the center. In the middle you see a circular control panel. One of the ship chargers is empty. Angela tells you these chargers are to clean-up, fill-up and recharge the ships. Angela asks you to pick a ship and get in. Pulling the handle on top of the cockpit opens the cockpit and you get in the small one-sitter. The cockpit closes automatically when you get in. The cockpit looks cold and humid and is mostly metal with a couple of screens.
Through the dusty cockpit glass you see Angela talking to you but you can’t hear her, she realizes this and walks towards the control panel and sits behind it. You hear the intercom crackle and she comes through telling you she has to unlock you from the charger. This will turn off the gravity engines so you will go zero gravity. Angela puts a helmet on and buckles up. During the process an orange flash light indicates the gravity engines are offline. From the cockpit you see a couple of objects losing contact with the surface. While unlocking, the metal casing around the ship retracts and the ship rises from its charger. It stops to hover in between the ceiling and the floor, time to start the pre-flight check.
SHIP TUTORIAL STARTS
Angela asks you to turn around and face the control panel in the middle of the hangar room. You see the red light above the control panel lighting up green when pointed towards the control panel. Next she asks you to strafe to the right and use the thruster to move forward a bit in order to turn the ship again en align for a safe exit. Do a roll to complete the check, and off you go!
Lights on the ship are on and you are looking at a long, drilled out tunnel. The tunnel is lit for the first 200 meters before it goes completely dark. Angela tells you to let out BOT and let him guide you the way to the lost drill head on the 3rd level.
