Whats in the future for Fallout and Interplay

Post » Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:42 pm

I know gamesas sold the rights to Fallout to Bethesda. My question(s) is :
was it just for Fallout 3 ?
will gamesas ever produce a new Fallout ?
if so ....
is there anything in the works ?
will gamesas ever finish their version of Fallout 3 ?

Thank You,

Obviously, this is not the official answer... but...

Initially gamesas only sold rights to produce Fallout games (3,4,5 I believe). Later, they sold all rights to the Fallout line, while negotiating the right to produce an MMO with the Fallout name (with some fees and requirements attached). Van Buren (the original Fallout 3) is, for all intents and purposes, a dead project.

So, Fallout the IP is owned by Bethesda, but gamesas has the chance to make a pretty good MMO out of the deal.

Someone with a more official title, please correct me if this is wrong.

Basically Bethesda owns the rights to the Fallout franchise, but has given gamesas permission to produce a MMOG for Fallout - which we assume is V13 - as long as they make it by April 2011. This means that gamesas has four years to produce the game otherwise the rights go straight back to Bethesda. Whether that means Bethesda also gets the content for the game as well I don't know. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

Maybe I'm too stupid, or too young(I'm 16) to understand this but why gamesas clings to such brand as Fallout which they sold to Bethesda if they still have such brand as Wastland (if you know what I mean 8-) )

You are not stupid, a bit naive mayhap. Nowadays the name is everything. A name is used to denote a franchise and most people know the IP Fallout. This is why owning that IP is basically everything. gamesas does not cling to it, it only clings to an mmo, which was successfully negotiated when they struck the deal with Bethsoft to sell the Fallout franchise (my God it hurts even to write this down :( )

The reason for that of course is that gamesas needs money and needs money fast if they want to keep going. MMO games are quite popular nowadays, so that was a good choice. This combined with the name of Fallout is expected to be a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge hit. After the mmo, gamesas will have nothing to do with Fallout universe sadly........

Players will be more faithful to gamesas's Fallout mmo as a place to see the future of Fallout and build the story.

Speculating:
When the Fallout mmo comes out, the design and feel will be so "Falloutish" that any new Fallout games bethesda comes out with will be high critized and Beth may even have to create games around the Fallout mmo to maintain a good sale of the game, otherwise it would be a title best returned to gamesas when the time comes.

An mmo is a forever game. Lots of expansions can come from it so the future of Fallout can come from one, expanding game.

That speculation is a good one :D However, what you 've written down is not very likely. Take a look at Fallout 3. Bethesda put soooooooooooooooooooooo much money into the advertisemant and overhyping of the game that people are buying it like candy. They have changed the face of Fallout, and sadly, 3 became the current standard. Most of their buyers do not even know Fallout 1 and 2. Take a look at youtube and the "zomfg" kids" For them, and they constitute most of Fallout 3's audience this is the Fallout.

They don't know about gamesas, let alone Black Isle Studios, and frankly, they don't care. In fact, the game is so popular that gamesas's best bet is to create their mmo in a similar style...so they can heavily rely on Fallout 3's success and its fans...... In a world of money, sales are everything, so if you want to speculate, do ir from a business perspective.

What I have written down is my personal opinion, and I can only hope that I will be proven wrong. ISOMETRIC view Chris ISOMETRIC !!! Ya hear ?

I think that they will succeed. The fact that Fallout 3 was successful will give Fallout MMO a very big boost. reguardless with the original devs here I am sure that the game will do very well.

With such a bad economy and even big game companies like actiblizzard losing money it will be difficult to find a company/partner who will cough up 30 mill. Need to stabilize pronto for the sake of fallout mmo :D

While Bethesda's incarnation of Fallout is waiting for me in the States and that I have only exposed myself to a few vids of its development while on deployment, I can say with relative confidence that the current release seems a stretch from the game setting which we all know and love. If a few posts are accurate, it would appear that Bethesda relied heavily upon the Oblivion engine to make their version of Fallout. If this is true, then there remains much to be had in the franchise for gamesas to exploit due to this deviation. Stating that Fallout is a moniker that has more importance and relevance than the I.P. of WASTELAND is a hard pill to swallow and I say so for a few reasons. It is my opinion, that a majority of the consumers who are buying the new "Fallout" are only doing so because of the impact Oblivion had upon them and upon the market. I would wager that if a poll was taken of these consumers, that less than 30 percent would know the franchise's history; let alone having ever played a Fallout before outside of perhaps that Playstation iteration. What this means is, while the apparent success of Bethesda's work will surely be a boost to a Fallout MMO, it is not implying that gamesas can not successfully resurrect the Wasteland title and in effect have their cake and eat it too. All they would have to do, is release an expansion pack for the Fallout MMO titled Wasteland. Make the expansion interesting enough to seem as an evolution of Fallout instead of a mere addition to content and BOOM, gamesas has its conventional game back. The second reason I believe this is possible is because we, excuse me - gamesas, has the creative genius of the franchise back. Without that vision, Bethesda can only improve on what has already been done and inevitably deviate whether good or bad. Without Chris at the helm, what Bethesda has done is behave like a cover band. With a little work, a true modern Fallout can be had through Wasteland and in the mean-time hopefully an MMO. Let's see what the future brings - hopefully more Louis Armstrong and plasma rifles. - Only cowards hide behind monikers.

You can't do that: If gamesas released a expansion pack for V13 that is essentially Wasteland it would mean that Bethesda would own the rights to that universe. Let's not even mention that Wasteland and Fallout may be similar enough to cause a clash over copyright issues.

Besides, Fallout is probably considered my the masses now as a Bethesda title; many of the Fallout 3 fans have probably not played the first 2 Fallouts, and thus have not heard of gamesas. That means putting "gamesas" on the front cover won't sell it, the "Fallout" will. It's for this reason that they can't just make a Wasteland game either. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

gamesas does not have the rights to Wasteland. Brian Fargo's InXile does. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

Ah, well that changes everything doesn't it? Oh well, my post has been near invalidated...

Still, my point about Fallout selling the title and not gamesas still stand, unfortunately. A massive thank you to EA for:

They're not clinging to it, the Fallout fans are. They made a bunch of other great games, but V13, which is almost officially confirmed as the Fallout MMO is their first project. It's a good time, new people recognize the name, and that deadline is a good reason too.

Wasteland was always under the control of EA, but they recently sold the rights to Brian Fargo's company and he says he plans to make a official Wasteland 2.

James Van Houte, I know some people who never really fully realized Oblivion was part of series, and now don't know Fallout 3 is the third of the series. Though that might be because they're just stupid and don't know what nuclear fallout is and they think it's some weird name like XL7 or IntroLineQ
