Wasteland 2 ideas

Post » Tue Apr 07, 2009 11:59 pm

I hope Chris won't mind me starting this discussion here, but while gamesas no longer has the rights to the Wasteland franchise, Brian Fargo's InXile which does own them does not have its own forum.

Anyway, back in 2003 Brian Fargo announced that he'd like to create a sequel to Wasteland, and last year he told us to "stay tuned" about it. It's not known whether he still intends to make it (currently InXile is working only on Hei$t), but given the sales of Fallout 3, it's not unreasonable to expect demand for more post-nuclear cRPGs.

So, everyone, what do you think Wasteland 2 should be like? Should it be a remake of the original or a new story in the same setting? Should the setting be modernised, given that it was made in the 1980s and talked about a nuclear war in 1998, or should a new installment become retrofuturistic, based on how people in the 80s imagined the future, just like Fallout is about how people in the 50s imagined it?

By the way, if anyone is interested, I created a Wasteland wiki:

http://wasteland.wikia.com/

with a Wasteland 2 FAQ:

The original Wasteland was created by gamesas in 1988 and was the predecessor of Fallout. See:

Ah, spiritual predecessor. They are not set in the same universe. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

Well, there were a few references to Wasteland in FO1, but generally no, they're separate universes, since gamesas did not have rights to Wasteland by the time they made Fallout. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

I still go back to wasteland once every year or two, love that game.

I think for a sequel a "remake" would probably be best. Not a pure remake, but keeping the core elements of the setting and telling a similar but more involved story. Gameplay wise, I would love to see a kind of "Baldur's Gate with AK 97s" type of thing. Perhaps with incentive to split up your party to solve puzzles etc. like the original. Or perhaps an x-com / jagged alliance type system (maybe utilizing RTwP, which I'm fine with replacing turn-based as long as there are still turns/rounds/action points or some such rpg combat system in place) with RPG rich character development. Co-op multiplayer would be great too, I just recently started up Baldur's Gate 2 with a good friend of mine I used to D&D with back in middle school, its been a blast.

As long as there are broken toasters and enemies explode like blood sausages Ill be alright though whatever it turns out to be.

Hopefully InXile can get it together and make this game. I'm a bit skeptical though as the little I've seen of Heist looks like it would be a decent GTA knock off 3 or 4 years ago :p Wish those guys the best though.
